Question Popcorn anyone?

I hear a popping and crackling noise at idle and when I shut the engine off. I think this is my catalytic convertor, but I'm not sure.
Anyone?

I have a similar setup to yours and I hear the popping and pinging at idle and especially shut down. I believe its the exhaust system heating up and cooling down. How much is too much, who knows.

I know what you mean though, lots of pinging.

That's normal for this truck. As it goes through more heat/cool cycles, the sounds will diminish greatly. My '99 did it for several months. A year later, I realized the cracking sounds have stopped.

To some extent, stainless steel exhaust will make cooling and expansion noises.

Be aware though, that my muffler had something let loose inside (with less that 2000 miles on it) when it was at full operating temperature. The muffler would have a tremendous buzz when the truck or exhaust system was moved.

See the threads under Other Body, Pickup Bed noise.

I also had the same problem in my 99, it was gone by 4000 miles. Don't worry.

That happens to mine to. Mine however comes from the a/c condensate dripping on the hot exhaust. Dealer says it is ok but I do not believe them.

Upon reflection, my last 3 motorcycles did it, my last new cars did it, my new 97 F-150 did it, and my new 2K still does it at over 5,000 miles. Somewhere along the line, just when you get used to it, it seems to go away -- and you forget about it until someone does something like posting a question like this to a user-group.

Come to think of it not, I'm surprized that it's still popping and cracking at 5K miles -- but based on past experience, I'm not worried.

Question

Thought I'd revive a dead thread...

At 8000 miles I'm still cooking corn..any suggestions? Please tell me "It'll be all right. You're just having reoccurring nightmares."

I think you got used to it, if you aren't hearing it anymore.

I replaced my stock exhaust with a Gibson and put the stock muffler on the side patio. Yesterday I was out there doing some projects near where the muffler was lying on the ground. The muffler was in the shade but when the sun got high enough it started hitting the muffler. Every 30 seconds or so, I could hear the muffler make a pinging sound as it heated up from the sun. Now if the metal in the muffler makes noise just from the suns rays, I imagine it makes a lot louder noise from exhaust heat.

The heating duct-work in my house snaps/cracks/pings or however you wish to describe it -- and it scared the heck out of my daughter until we all just got used to it and forgot about it.

I had not given Nick's noises a moment's thought for weeks now -- but after reading this post yesterday -- I again heard it when I parked it today - 10,000 miles and still popin' fresh!

I've got Orville Redenbacher beat. Mine still pops for about 3 minutes with over 19k miles. Where's the butter?

Mine does it too. I've only got 1800 miles on it but I don't think the popping noise will go away with miles cuz it's the water condensation from the A/C dripping on the exhaust pipe. I'm not crazy about it but since i've never heard of anyone having any problem related to it, I don't worry to much.
