I was at the local Walmart the other day and saw an oil I hadn't seen before. It was Mobil Delvac, 5w40. The label said something like 'engineered for max performance under the worst conditions, blah,blah. The usual stuff. And also touted that it met a bunch of standards for diesel as well as gas applications.
What is unusual was the price, $35 for 4 litres, as opposed to $26 for 4 litres of reg. Mobil synthetic.
I haven't seen this oil mention here before. Does anyone know anything about it ?

Yes this is Mobil Synthetic Diesel oil.

I do belive it also passes SJ spec too though. The reason it is high because Diesel oil requires different additives than gas engine oil. Also need the ability to suspend soot better. Also this oil has better extended drain capabilites like amsoil oils.
There are truckers out there doing 60k intervals whearas most trucks change oil at 15-20 intervals.

It is good oil but is not needed in a gasoline engine. Our engines don't produce the acid and soot that diesels do.
Stick with the regular mobil 1 and you will be fine.

I would think that the higher detergency of a diesel oil would be a good thing. But on the other hand I had also read somewhere that they may damage the seals and gaskets on a gas engine. What do you think?

 

Sludge and varnish is not a problem with synthec oil. So the extra detergency is not needed really. It is a better oil hence the higher price. But the regular Mobil 1 is all you need. Unless you are running extended drains then you need it.

neither Mobil1 or Delvac 1 will damage your seals. That is a myth.

Amsoil also makes a 5w30 diesel oil and it is also rated for SJ too, but unless you have a mixture of diesels and gas vehicles in your fleet of I don't recommend the oil. Now if you do have the above it is really nice to only have to stock on type of oil, it will also cut down on cost since you can buy more quantity of one oil and not a small quantity of a bunch of different oils.

I have used Delvac 1 in my Lincoln, cost $14.85/gal. I decided against in in my truck because Ford might have a problem with the 5-40 viscosity if there was a warranty issue.
