Post 4.6L Sounds Like A Diesel!!

Hope Someone Can Help Me With This Problem I Might Be Having. When I accelerate from a dead stop the (engine..) makes a pinging sound, sounds like a diesel truck. But it stops within a second and once the truck shifts into second the sound is gone. while It's still in first if I gas on it it'll sometimes make the sound. Has anyone experienced this or heard of something similar?? Thanks. It's A 4.6L Triton V-8 Auto.

Does it go away by changing to a better grade of gasoline?

Yes two things I want you to try........use
Chevron Techron concentrate as the directions suggest. Next, have the MAF cleaned, then disconnect the battery for at least 5 minutes to reset the KAM. This should help you out greatly. It worked for me!!

see my post under K&N Hoax in this section

Hey FordRacing99, welcome to my club! I've got the 4.6 Hesitation Special with a similar problem as you. When I accelerate from a dead stop with moderate to heavy throttle not only will I get hesitation, but a nice gasp from under the hood followed by around a second of heavy knocking. I've tried every brand of gas available in town here. I've removed my K&N FIPK and SuperChip which I try to hunt down this problem as those 2 parts make the problem worse.

Running mid-grade or premium will eliminate the problem except under a fast WOT from a dead stop. I have a dealer appointment a week from this Monday to get it looked at again. The last time I got some kid right out of high school talling me that nothing is wrond because there weren't any codes. Arrgh!

I will say one thing, even with the problems my little 4.6 (now stock) will still give me a nice tire chirp when I floor it!

I had the same prob. with my 4.6 for some time. Tried techron & a bunch of other fixes. Some made it better. At 55k, it finnaly error coded--I have a scanner. It was ego-sensor 1-bank 2. Bank 1 was dealer replaced under warrenty. I replaced the bank 2 sensor & the prob is gone. Just my experience! It may not fix them all or even any but it might be worth checking out.

Thumbs up

I had the same problem wit my 98 4.6, numerous trips to the dealer showed no codes, and I was running Citgo or Texaco regular unleaded. Well for some reason one visit to the dealer, they desided to change the MAF, and since then the truck has ran perfect. This was all done about 6 months ago. Hope this helps.

The Crrrraaaaaaak upon part-throttle acceleration is something that has plagued us since the 70's (lean-burn).

Please try two things (but one of them not this weekend, however):

a) Give it a mile of WOT, and...

b) Try some Gasohol (yup gasohol).

Theory behind it:

Blast-out any build-up on pistons and Gasohol lights slower -- and tends not to detonate as bad as gasoline.

If that works -- great -- could mean a few things -- and even a combination of them:

'crud' on pistons (unlikely) or deaf knock sensor (tuning your engine just ahead of spark knock on acceleration gives nice seat-of-the-pants feel (just ask Mike the SuperChip guy -- that's what they sell you).

A moment of Crraack THAT GOES AWAY instantly is fine -- it is the constant cackling at cruise speed that destroys pistons (makes nice holes in them -- really).

I hope you tried the suggestion by MLaugh. You can shotgun it by doing both his and mine concurrently, but it will make pinpointing the problem a wee bit harder -- but then, if it works...

Z-man See my post above. You just confirmed what I have been pondering on. A dirty or faulty MAF sensor will cause pinging. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
