Question Oil pressure and low temp prob...HELP

OK guys got a 2000 4x4 expy. Love it. My lady tells me I spend more time detailing it on the weekends then her. Ok on the problem. In cold weather when starting the engine, I notice the oil pressure gauge stays at the bottom. After warming up it returns to normal postion. Occasionally if I start moving as soon as it returns to normal it will drop then rise again. Is this do to the oil being cold and the pump cant move it as good or is it a more serious problem. Also any suggestions on how to avoid startup wear on the engine ie. duralube or slick50. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Your oil pressure sending unit is malfunctioning. Take it to the dealer and describe to the service mgr. what is happening, and they will replace it under warranty. My pick-up is doing the same thing.

As far as engine wear on cold starts is concerned, I wouldn't add the Slick 50 or any of the other addatives. I would just stick with a high quality motor oil and regular maintenance.

By all means do not add additives. If you really want to reduce cold engine wear switch to a high quality synthetic oil like Mobile one 5W-30, or 0W-30.

Sending unit

There is a TSB for the 2000 and 2001 sending unit. Mine did the exact same thing. The TSB says sending unit has no response on cold soak start up. I described it to Ford service manager and he knew exactly what it was. Go to AllData for the TSB.

Sending Unit

Whoops, go to NHSTA.gov - Office of Defects TSB Database. Specifically look under 2000 F150 4.6L, component Interior Systems:Instrument Panel:guage: Indicator:Oil. I remember seeing the same problem for other years/motors. SBN 14907; Bulletin Sequence Number 202; Date of Bulletin 05/01; NHSTA Item Number:SB620221. States - Concerns with vehicles exhibiting the oil pressure guage registering low or no oil pressure usually on initial start-up after several hours of cold soak. Ford replacement part number is SW-5696; SW Asy-Oil Press SDR.

Good luck. ARL

The part number of the new oil pressure switch is :1U5Z-9278-DA. And SSM/Special Service Message 14907 addresses this issue. Says that some 99,00,01 F150s and other ford V8s may have trouble with their oil pressure gauge when the engine is below normal operating temperature. See my post on this issue.
