Post Jacobs Mileage Master or DIS

I have read a lot about Jacobs on this message board but have yet to figure out if yall are talking about the Jacobs Mileage Master or DIS (Distributorless Ignition System). If they do what everyone says they do I will definatley get on but I dont know which one your talking about.

this-end up: The Jacobs DIS unit is the only one Jacobs makes that will work on the 4.6/5.4 engines. MSD has one (DIS4) but it involves cutting wires. Order Jacobs from Summit 1-800-230-3030 part # 331711 without plug wires. Price is $290.69 + handling.
They don't stock it, so unless you want 2nd day air, it'll take a while to get it. Look around the message boards & you'll find my truck listed.

Cool

I too have the DIS System When I ordered mine I got the entire system from Jacobs for $500 (included the plug wires which you will need). Then Doorslammer told me about Summit and I ended up getting a $125 refund when I told Jacobs I was going to return the ignition (Jacobs has a 30 day no fault refund policy). From other Message Board postings I get that Jacobs won't sell for $375, but that is the price for the 4.9L kit part number 335711 from summit. Get it thru summit and save.
I think mine is well worth it. I barely touch the throttle and my truck pulls away like it use to when I got into the throttle a lot more. I am now TRYING to take it easy to see what kind of milage it truely delivers but I know it is better then stock. Read the last post I put into the "Back again with JACOBS info" posting for some info from TRUCKIN magazine.
LOL.

Thumbs up

The DIS is for the newer trucks. I have the old style MileageMaster on my '95. Works great. More power, especially low to mid range torque, and mileage was up. Like a chip, it's hard to keep your foor off the gas pedal once you discover the extra power!
I average about 15,000 miles a year, and at current gas costs ($1.50 for reg) I'm saving $200+ per year in gas! What other mod will do that for you?

Seems like I have heard postings that if you change to the jacobs DIS, you need to change your plugs as well. Can I leave the bosch +4's in or do they need to go? thanks,

Ken

KSONGER,
As I posted in a past message board, had Autolite Duel Platnum plugs in my truck when I put on the Jacobs unit. Did have a problem but don't know what exactly caused it. I ended up puttng copper core bosch plugs in as recomended by Jacobs. Runs great now. LOL.

Where oh where to mount my jacobs DIS/Mileage Master.

I got my new toy in yesterday and am trying to decide where/how to mount it in my '98 4.6L Expedition. Seems like the best place is behind the grill between the fiberglass grill shroud in front of the radiator. I'm planning on fabricating some verticle aluminum bars into brackets and screw those to the fiberglass shroud top and bottom, then attach the Jacobs to drilled holes in the bars. Also, anyone who has done the install on a 4.6L, the Jacobs connectors appear to be identical for the Coil packs. The instructions do not address this so I assume it makes no difference which connector goes to which coil pack. Also looked at he prefit of the connectors on the power cables to the battery. Doesn't seem like a decent way to clmp these in the battery terminals without loosing clamping pressure on the battery termnals. I.e you open the clamps, insert the jacobs power feed tabs between the opened ears of the clamp where the clamp screw is located and then tighten the clamp up. This takes away space for the clamp to close down. Does it make any difference? were you able to ghet enough clamping force on the clamps to the battery terminals with this set up?

The gap instructions I recieved, by the way said start at .060 on "OEM" plugs. I assume they mean the stock plugs using the term OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). This seems a contradiction to what others have been told by Jacobs to use copper core plugs.
(what type plugs do I have "OEM"?)

Lastly, anyone run the ACCEL coil packs after the JACOBS DIS/Milage Master install? Are they worth it?

Let me know what experience you've had and if there is a neater "trick" location for the milage master unit. Thanks, folks.

Cool

Hi Ksonger-the plus 4's will have to go and I would recommend Bosch copper core plugs. The story the tech reps at Jacobs told me was that the Jacobs computer senses each cylinder and is able to multi-fire the plugs in order to burn all the fuel. The precious metal plugs screw up the computer. Good news is Bosch Coppers are less than a buck apiece! Changing the plugs is not as bad as I thought it would be. Getting the old plug wires off is worse than I thought it would be! I mounted my computer in front of the windshield washer container. Just unbolt the container and move it out of the way, then you can mount the computer with three screws, to the radiator bracket. It is very solid there, is away from the heat of the engine and can't be seen from the front of the truck, as in through the grill. Try it!
No gas milage to report yet as I haven't been on a trip. I will be driving from Florida to "The Texas Heat Wave" in Austin so I should get some good figures for every one. Hope this helps.

Thanks Flats Man:

I talked to Jacobs ysterday and they concur with everything you say. BTW, they are having a sale ending today(Thursday) on the DISw/wires for $409.00. I am thinking of gettting mine from RV Performance @$375 delivered since they have the best price and I have a credit going with them for the returned Power Pulleys.

Doorslammer,
I bought mine directly from Jacobs, and had excellent service from someone named JW. Didn't get the whole kit, since I just replaced the wires, just the Milage Master DIS. I must have gotten lucky. BTW, does anyone know why Ford put seemingly two different plug styles in my 4.6??? One side had some number and a flat electrode, the other side had the same number with a G after it and a rounded electrode. Strange,,,,,,,JMC????

Does anyone know the technical aspects of the Jacob DIS system? Does it read off of a crankshaft sensor? I have a 90 toronado with DIS and it uses something called the waste spark method. There are three coil packs (it's a V6) strapped onto an ignition module. Distributorless ignitions are great, except when the coil begins to wear out... then it gets expensive.
