How can I make 400+ HP?
Ok, I'm new here but am certain that you guys/gals can help me out...I am wanting to achieve 400 or more RWHP...
I have a 99 F-150 4x4 Lariat 5.4l SC..3.55 gears..
Current performance mods: K&N FIPK...Gibson Catback single 3inch...Superchip...
I will be receiving a Magnacharger kit next week..And sending my chip back to Mike for reprogramming...
I am probably going to upgrade my fuel pump,MSD or Jacobs ignition, and go to a 75mm TB (hopefully Edelbrock)..
Is it possible with all of these mods I can reach my goal of 400+?
If not please rip into me and set me on the right path as to what to do (without bottle feeding my truck) to reach my goal..
Thanks a million to the best board I've ever seen..

JD,
I think with adding the supercharger and the existing mods you already have, you should be able to hit close to or slightly over the 300rwhp. You definitely gonna have to tap into your transmission and rearend for the added strength. I assume you have the 4R70W tranny, so I think you might want the Lightning's 4R100 transmission, and possibly 3.73 gears. You'll also have to get a higher flowing fuel pump and injectors. But honestly, you're gonna have to rework on the internal engine parts: cam, possibly bigger heads, etc., to hit that magic 400 mark. I also suggest some GOOD gaskets like Felpo, because those cheap Ford gaskets won't cut it. Also some good reputable headers.
My best suggestion is don't worry about getting so much horsepower. Concentrate on keeping your truck as light as possible and being able to transfer all that torque and power to the wheels for traction. Best of luck! Keep us informed on your progress.

Have you purchased the kit? I have them available. I can get you above 330rwhp, and I also have a few trix up my sleeve...

Thanks guys..You have really given me a LOT to think about...This is most definitey the kind of input I was needing...
This will basically be an ongoing project till I can sqeeze as much power out as I safely can...I will definitely be replacing the injectors, ignition, and fuel pump soon...I have the Magnacharger ordered...
I will keep everyone posted with how its going..Not to mention looking for more advice later on.
And sorry about posting the same message in multiple places, I wasnt aware that I shouldn't..

JDarty, The Magnacharger kit is supposed to come with a fuel pump in the kit. As for the TB from Edelbrock. My advise is to order it now and make darn sure that they do not give you the TB for the 5.4 Mustang. According to BBK, who makes them for Edelbrock, they are packaging the TB wrong and there are no seperate numbers to either vehicle, they are using the same part #. They said to tell them you need the one for the truck application.
Hope that helps! And good luck!!

With the 5.4, you have the larger 9.75" axle (this is good). The 4R70W is rated for 700 ft/lbs. of torque. With this engine, to get anywhere close to this hp, you need a supercharger. The new Holley Thunder Intercooled Supercharger is serious hp. The kit contains: fuel pump, fuel injectors, a special chip, etc. I saw it's stats several months ago on their website. I think the hp = 390 hp. The new Vortec Supercharger is great also and virtually quiet. You don't use your FIPK with these setups, and your exhaust system must be tuned correctly to obtain the highest benefits from these systems. If you pep up the 5.4 engine too much you get to a point where the base engine is pushing it's internal limit. This is not a 429SCJ.

10-12 lbs boost will get you what you want. you will need to manage the engine fuel and timing very well. You will also need a very good intercooler. I know that spearco makes one for supercharged 4.6L's It is a water to air unit that fits under the intake manifold. I would guess they could make you one too! This particular intercooler is very thin and totally non restrictive. It has very high fin density, 24 per inch. This gives it the ability to do the job! I think the size is around 11 inches long 6 inches wide and 2 inches thick. From what I hear the 4.6L mustang drag guys love this unit. Of course this unit is designed for a roots type blower however I understand it will work with any type of blower. As an added bonus a liquid to air unit can be used with an ice filled container. this puts ice water into the intercooler and allows charge temps cooler than ambient air.
Good luck to ya and keep us informed.

400 RWHP is a LOT. With an automatic, you'll need something on the order of 480-500 flywheel HP to get there. That is probably beyond the range of bolt-on mods.
The supercharger is a major step in the right direction, but you'll need a lot of boost, probably more than your stock bottom end can take. At the very least, you'll need to replace your pistons with LOWER compression forged ones, just like Ford did with the Lightning. I'd guess you'd want to look at a full print and balance with aftermarket conn rods and either a billet or a fully prepped and nitrided stock crank. You'll probably want to look at some kind of a girdle for the lower mains as well. You will need to upgrade the oiling system for more flow and possibly more pressure including a larger baffled sump with windage tray and external cooling. You'll need to rework the heads for a lot more flow than they're now cabable of handling, and you'll need to DOUBLE the output of your EFI system and install some blower specific cams. Your ignition will need work too. Etc., etc., etc. Basically everything in your engine and drivetrain will need reworked or replaced.
I'm not trying to rain on your parade here, but that level of performance requires a pretty major project and is not likely to be real streetable when you're done. If you want to build a pure race truck, (and that's what you're talking about) you need to line up an engine builder and figure out together where you're headed and how to get there. If you want a really fast street truck and want to do it with bolt-ons, you're likely going to have to settle for about 100 HP less.

Simple:
Step one: remove rear driveshaft
Step two: engage 4-wheel drive
Step three: Install second engine (from a Lightning, preferably) in the bed.
Step four: hook up second engine to rear axle
Step five: Grin like you've never grinned before.

Ford used many parts from the Super Duty to make the Lightning reliable. Careful planning is is order if you intend to run serious boost.
I would, however, consider only running a 50/50 mix of antifreeze/water unless you plan to drain and refill after a night at the dragstrip.

The easiest way to get 400 hp is to buy an LS1 Camaro or Tran Am, take it to Motorsport Technologies in Houston and have them do a heads/cam, exhaust job. No supercharger or nitrous required and very streetable. In fact one Firehawk dynoed 431 n/a.
Some how I didn't think you would like my idea......

97 4.6 F150, 1/8 = 10.885 @ 64.10 mph, 88 5.0 Mustang 1/8 = 7.191 @ 94.76 mph

just kidding...
I have decided just to do the Magnacharger and Headers for now...And maybe begin other mods in a few months...From what I've been getting my next big step(several months from now) may be to get a good set of high performance heads...Costly, but should be money well spent...Anyone have any ideas for me as far as the heads go?
I should have my supercharger installed within the next couple weeks...And I'll keep everyone posted
thanks
