Royal Purple Synthetic In!

Well, after reading countless posts of the pros & cons of using synthetic oil as opposed to conventonal Dino oil, I finally decided that with the kind of stop/start driving I do here on the island, synthetic might be the way to go.

Having made that decision, my next move was to identify an excellent quality synthetic oil brand.

I did my research on the internet and using truck mags and based on the results, I went with The Royal Purple brand of synthetic oil (5w30).

For good measure, I also went with a highflow oil filter from K&N Engineering (K&N Gold).

Drove the truck down to the Xpress lube this morning and in 15 minutes, the job was done.

So far, so good!

I did the same thing you did exactly. My truck liked it. It actually drank the stuff, like 1/3 quart in 800 miles. I switched to Pennz full synthetic and so far, no usage between changes. The RP I used was the racing formula. Thought it would be better for towing in the summer, but not for my truck.

Yep!

It's(their 5W20=#11 Racing Oil) been good to mine--same filter too--great combonation.

I've neevr tried the more 'exotic' oils like Royal Purple or Amsoil. I do run LE in my rear diff though, which is expensive and hard to find but worth it if you tow. I started using Castrol Syntec when I first got the truck and it made my engine slap really loud when cold (yeah, I have a slapper from early 1999)... Upon further investigation and much needed advice I switched to Mobil 1 and stayed with the Motorcraft filter and ever since then you can barely notice the slapping. Next oil change I'm going to try a Mobil 1 finlter and see if the slapping goes away completely. I guess the good thing about Mobil 1 is that you can get it just about anywhere at a 'reasonable' price.

I also recently saw a 1992 Chevy Lumina's V6 torn down after having used Mobil 1 for most of it's life (over 120,000 miles) and the inside of the motor was incredibly clean. It was a fleet vehicle from the company I work for. The car was totalled in an accident so the mechanics decided to tear the motor down and create a kit of parts for the remaining vehicles, all the same vintage Liminas. I'm not necessarily sold only on Mobil 1 but I am sold on synthetics in general.

I wouldn't mind trying one of the other oils out there. I'm just not sure where you find them that's easy access and at a reasonable cost.

How much for your oil change ? I know the K&N filter is about $10 of the cost...

I paid about 6 bucks a quart for the Racing Oil. I liked the K&N filter because it has the take off nut welded on to it so you don't have to worry about a strap wrench in tight places. Just need a long 1 inch combo or box end. Since then, I wire wheel my Motorcraft filters and JB Weld one on it before installing it.

Great idea... I'll try it on the Mobil 1 filter. That's too cool...

I'm about 175 miles West and a little South of Chgo.

Try using the Zip code 60013 in Weather.com's Web site. 60013 is Cary, Il which is about 45 miles Northwest of Chgo. I'm not sure of the zip codes directly North of the city. 60634 would be a zip code in the city itself. That's the one I grew up in before moving down here where it's not illegal to play with motorized toys...

By me it's 40 degrees and sunny today, 40 and rain tomorrow, 33 and possible snow on Sunday, then starting Monday the temps go into the teens for the rest of the week it looks like. As long as we don't have ice on the roads life is good although riding quads in the snow is a hoot and a half...

'67 ? Sounds pretty neat. Does it run or is it a 'big' project ? I had a '69 with the 200 CI straight 6 in it and a 3 on the floor when I was in high-school... It was primer gray but it ran great. never did paint it, too lazy and too into the female types back then... Wish I had it now though. That was a cool car...

Yea, I had a '69 fastback back then. Wife says that's why she married me. This one is a coupe and it is running. Has a 289 auto. Just needs some body and floor pan tweeking like all of them.

You don't find those 289s around much any more. Collectors either have them or they've been re-cycled into other objects that are not as interesting.
Good luck with that one. Sounds like a cool project.

My oldest son starts driving next spring and I'm looking for a decent, maybe early '90s, compact pickup to start working on. Thing is people want to much for them. I'm looking forward to spending some time this winter fixing something like that up.

He'll never get something like you're project on my nickle though...

I'm picking this one up for 3.5 G's. Going to be a nice little project. Turn it into a stock summer cruiser. And it has air on it. Sweet.

Very cool. Sounds like a really good price based on what I've seen 'fully restored' mis-to-late '60s stangs going for... $10K !$!$!$ You've got to be joking. Sounds like you have a good deal going.
