4.6 v.s. 5.4
Guys,
It is not HP that destroys rear ends it is torque. The 4.6 only puts out 290-293 lbs-ft of torque VS 330-350 for the 5.4.
That little 40-60 lbs-ft of troque is enough to blow the rear end with a manual. I know I have blown 3 in two trucks.

I would suspect that that torque difference is gonna make up for some of that tranny loss as well. If you look at the torque curves, the 4.6 falls off pretty quickly compared to the 5.4. Seems to me that the 4.6 manual might get the 5.4 auto on hole shot, but the 5.4 may catch up down the road.....
If you pull anything heavy stay away from the 5-speed tranny. You probably will end up frying the clutch. The hardest part is getting a big trailer moving from a stop and the auto (I have a 4.6 auto 4x4, 3.55LS, S/C) definitely does a good job. Torque multiplication with the auto is what does it.
Sure, maybe a 5-spd beats an auto but who really cares. When you stomp on either one they both go pretty good. That's really all that matters isn't it.
From what I hear the 5.4 is a gas pig. The 4.6 likes to rev, not sure about the 5.4L. Test drive both at the dealer.
Get an auto for towing and slap a supercharger on it if you need more GO.

I'm very happy with my 5.4l auto 4x4 it si more than fast enough for me. I think that the engine\transmission combo that makes the owner happy is the best for them in my case I don't tow alot but I'm in traffic so a manual would be a royal pain! I like my truck just the way it is lol
Oh Boy!
The 4.6 with a 5 speed is going to have more hp hit the pavement than a 5.4 auto. That is just a fact! However, while the torque converter (in the auto) is eating up horse power it is also multiplying torque. So the 4.6 liter 5 speed isn't necessarily going to be faster. That wasn't the question. The question was which one would have more hp at the rear wheels. The answer is the 4.6 liter with the manual tranny!
BotherDave,
I think you are jumping to conclusions.

stumpjumper.. maybe i am. it just seem that the 4.6 guys say they can beat the 5.4 and the v-6 guys say they can beat the 4.6 so that would make the v-6 the quickest. i think the quickest stock short wheel base regular cab truck i have seen is 15.7, the quickest 4.6 was 15.9 and the quickest (stock) v-6 is 15.9 (with a muffler upgrade) all from 260 h.p , 232 h.p. and 205 h.p.
Here is my unbiased opinion. Under equal conditions the fastest Stock truck, ¼ mile unloaded, will be the reg cab work series with 4.6, 5 speed, 3.55 LSD. Put any other truck against and it will loose. Lightnings not included.

are u guys serious when u say a 4.6 man puts down more horspower than a 5.4 auto? at what rpm? but who has more tourque. cant beleive a 4.6 will beat a 5.4, maybe close in horspower at higher rpm but tourque should be a differnt story- just like a 302 against a 351. in a race the 4.6 would be lighter so i could see it being closer, lighter trans, lighter diff, lighter engine.
I think for the fact these are trucks i would rather have the heavier diff, but i also have a 5.4 so as somone previously said people like what they have, i do know that a 5.4 is small in a superduty so image what would have happend if ford would have put a 4.6 in there - mind you some may say it is a good fit in the superduty but then they probably havent driven a powerstroke
all the f150 engines seem to like to rev - 4.2 and 4.6 seem to need to rev a bit more compared to the 5.4 before they put out power wich makes sense if you looke at the tourque.
Any way ford did not use the 4.6/4.2 man with the 5.4 because it would not handle the power so if ford is willing to loose customers because of that i feel they may have been on to something about the power handling capability of the trans, but then putting a pi 5.4 with a 4r70 when they used to ues the e40d doesent make much sensor either except for the fact that a e40d weights a lot more than a 4r70

This whole "mine is bigger then your's" and "mine is faster then your's" is pretty funny.
I'd guess that 90% of truck owners bought their trucks to use as a truck. So what do you do with a truck? Haul heavy stuff. What do you need to haul that heavy stuff? Torque. What engine has more torque? The 5.4. (I'm only talking stock, from the factory here.)
For the other 10% of truck owners who bought them to storm the avenues and get to the next stop light first, then a 5-speed would probably be the way to go. And HP is what you need for that.
Two different camps here. You can't compare a "hauling" truck to a "drag racing" truck. That whole Apples and Oranges thing...
Why do you think all the race teams are concerned with HP? You never hear them talking about torque........ At least I never have.
Both sides are correct here. So, option out your rig for the purpose you intend to use it for.
Happy Trucking to all!
