To all of those concerned that I may have voided my warranty - it was gone 5000 miles ago (I have 41,000 miles on the truck) With respect to Rand's comments - I followed the instructions from the Haynes manual and from my grandfather who has owned a successful radiator repair business for many years. I think your "top mechanic" friend is over-complicating the cooling system in our trucks. As to the comment that we can only drain 80% of the old coolant with the engine still in the truck - that appears to be a perfectly accurate description to me. As I first posted - the block drain plug on the passenger side is underneath the motor mount and can't be reached. But, if you run the engine while you have the hose in the fluid reservoir, the coolant from the passenger side of the block should be flushed with water - and will hold almost 4 quarts of water once the radiator and driver's side of the block is drained. Simply take that extra 4 quarts of water into consideration when adding new coolant to get a 50/50 coolant/water mix. By the way, I flushed the red stuff and switched back to green, even though I'm still not convinced that the red is harmful - Prestone swears it is fine. For $10 I'd rather be safe than sorry though.
