Question Superchip?

I have a 99 S/C with a 4.6l. I am thinking about adding a superchip to improve performance, I was wondering what effect if any this would have on the odometer? A friend told me that the odometer reading is stored in the computer. Is this true or not? Thank you.

I don't know. Ask Mike Troyer (aka Superchips_Distributor). He could tell you for sure. You'll find him in the computer chips section.

Thumbs up

I would highly recommend a superchip! I am more than satisfied with mine.

It will have no effect on the odometer as far as changing it or altering its function. (if this is the correct answer to your question). Yes, the odometer is simply a display. For example, removing it and installing a new one will not change the readout.

Question

Has anyone done the superchip and the Jacobs Ignition on a 4.6L? If so, impressions and any comments on which was most effective, the order they were installed.

I've placed the jacobs on order and am debating bigger throttle body\superchip next.

All the superchip does is tell the computer what to do, it doesnt store information...It will do nothing to your odometer.......Dave

Hi Molonko,

The Superchip will not have any effect on your odometer functions, or it's readings.

So it's not a concern, and as a matter of fact, it would be highly illegal if we somehow manipulated or altered anything having to do with mileage displayed on the odometer, just so you know.

Hi dogsailor,

The Superchip will work just fine with just about any aftermarket ignition system, including the Jacobs systems.

There haven't been "a lot" of people who have installed both the Superchip and the Jacobs that have reported back here, maybe a half-dozen or so people over the last year, roughly.

That feedback was good in terms of the 2 components working together, no problems there. They mostly said they didn't feel a substantial power gain from the Jacobs unit, which is normally what we see as well. These late-model vehicles have much better ignition systems from the factory than what used to be some years ago.

Just recently there were a couple of people in another thread elsewhere that said they were very happy with what they got from the Jacobs setup on their F-150's. These are the only people we've heard back from that have said they felt what they got from Jacobs was well worth the $300-$500 price of their setups. Some guys were unhappy and returned the Jacob's units for refunds.

I personally like the idea of hotter ignition systems of course, you just have to have reasonable expectations of what it's really going to do for your vehicle, just like the Superchip or any other aftermarket part.

I personally would not buy the Jacobs unit for a power gain; I would consider it for improving gas mileage a bit and getting better throttle response, but I would not expect to feel a really noticeable power difference in the seat of the pants. This is just my opinion on this, and some people feel differently, of course.

One thing you can count on is the increased performance from the Superchip, which is why it is so popular.

You only have to make yourself happy, so do whatever *you* feel like doing; if that means the Jacobs setup, then do it and enjoy it, by all means.

And if you ever are interested in what the Superchip can do for you, please feel free to give us a shout, and we'll be happy to go over all the details with you.

Now with regards to installing a larger throttle body, you are not going to see any real power gain from that, your stock unit is not so small that the engine is already starved for more air, and that would have to heppen before you could see substantial power gains from a larger throttle body, so I would save my money on that component. There were some tests done a couple of years ago that showed very intersting results using larger throttle bodies... they found that the only time a larger throttle body adds more power on a basically stock engine is if you are still usiung the factory airbox *and* the factory paper air filter element. In that particular configuration, a larger throttle body was able to add 3-4 more horsepower to the 4.6 F-150. But when the intake is already opened up, with a K&N air filter or one of the airbox elimination kits, there were no power gains.

Good luck with your truck,

Dustoff,

Actually, what you stated is not true. The odometer actually does store the accumulated mileage on the vehicle (with these trucks, mine at least).

I had my instrument cluster replaced several thousand miles ago due to inconsistent character displays with the odometer. Ford had to replace the entire cluster in order to address this. When they installed my new instrument cluster, my odometer reading reflected what was originally on it when they first diagnosed and ordered the unit. This was even the few thousand miles that my vehicle had gained while it was waiting for the new instrument cluster.

Ford however, had a terrible time attempting to get my truck to stay running. After I picked up my truck with the new display, it wouldn't start. Ford had to reprogram my computer with a special code that would allow it to accept the new instrument display. Evidently, they have some sort of security built into the integrity of the odometer display being matched with the vehicle. Probably to keep people from swapping out displays on heavily mileaged vehicles.....
