5.4 Slapper
Hi All,
I thought that I would let you know that a friend of mine works at a dealer in Chattanooga TN and they have ordered over 200 new engines for replacement. The one they did last week at 2000 miles on it!!! Can you believe this crap. And the dealer close to me says there is nothing wrong? Yeah, right. Later all

Howdy 2KSCFOxFO,
Was wondering if you could ask your friend if they have replaced any engines in the 2000 F-150 yet?.

Just contacted my dealer yesterday about my 2000 5.4...mfg date of 8/3/99. I told them it sounds like a diesel starting up. Did it 2 days ago when it was 55 in the morning. It's hit and miss though. They said 2000's are making this noise as well, they said they had a statement from Ford stating the situation was "Normal" I've asked for that statement. If/when I get it I'll post it here.
Doesn't sound "Normal" to me. You sure do not have to listen to find it...it's there.
Sounds like the .wav file posted here, only louder.

Well this morning I am happy, I had my truck into the dealer for service due to yet another oil leaking head, and I complained about the cold engine knock, and they listened for that. They are replaceing the engine with 26,000 miles on it in a 1999 F150 with the 5.4. Ford didn't want them to do that, they just wanted the dealer to rebuild it agian and the dealer told me there is no way that they are going to do that to me agian. So I am happy, now if I can just get the door cracks fixed. I hope that the 2000 engine that they drop in doesn't knock, or it is back to the dealer agian!!!!!!

The piston slap issue that occured in 99 and previous 5.4L's does not occur on Y2K models. The problem was identified, and is fixed..
So, folks hearing knocking at startup on new Y2K trucks is probably something different..
One common cause is if you use an oil filter that lacks the anti-drain back valve in it. I think Fram filters lack this.
I wouldn't go around yelling the sky is falling until you know more of the facts..
Saying that your friend has ordered over 200 new engines isn't enough.. For what purpose? To replace the 99 and earlier slappers?

Both my father and I have 2000 models that rattle WORSE than diesels upon cold starts. IF Ford fixed the "slap", they broke something else. Unfortunately, we both use Motorcraft filters and have less than 4000 miles on the trucks. I changed to Mobil-1 and it didn't help. If we're lucky, these things will blow up before our warranty is out. Then again, who knows what they'll break to "fix" this problem... (that still sounds EXACTLY like piston slap).
Sure starting to worry that I should have bought a Chevy - slap, cracks, rust, missing fender skirts, less trim, crappy mileage, poor customer service... Ford's starting to re-live the 1970s all over again.

You don't want a Chevy either. I just traded my 99 Silverado for a 2000 F150 Lariat 4WD Supercab, with 5.4l.
The Silverado is a great design, but after two intermediate steering shafts the steering was still loose and rattling, ABS brakes were terribly scary, and every since about 2k miles, it had the worst engine noise I have ever heard and it was not a piston slap on cold start up. This was a noise that sounded exactly like an exhaust manifold leak only it wasn't. None of the dealerships would fix. They all responded with "It is within limits"...."They all do it".
You take your chances with any make, but you won't find any saviors in GM that will give you better than what you have right now.
Trust me. The new Silverados have plenty of quality issues to tend to. They over-rated the hp and torque figures also.

Ouch! My buddy, an ex Ford-lover, bought the '99 Silverado and swears it's the best thing since bikini's. I was beginning to believe him 'till I got my new Ford. I do wish that the Fords had a diff in the xfer case (the 'auto' 4wd feature); and I do miss the GMC 'one-thumb' steering -- but other than that...

I'll try to do some audio. The sound is more pronounced on cooler mornings- which are gone for a few months- but it still has a noticeable knock after sitting overnight. After a minute or so, the sound is completly gone and doesn't return while the engine is warm.
While I probably wouldn't actually buy a Chevy truck (VERY CLOSE- I actually did buy a 2000 Monte Carlo then traded it for my F150), it was embarrasing to start my truck next to my boss' 2000 Silverado and have him ask why I bought a diesel!

What are the engine build dates of your 2000s? If FORD has not fixed the piston slap in the 2000 model line..they are going to have a large number of unhappy customers. The door crack issue is another big one they need to get hot on!

Using a Motocraft S type filter here. The engine sounds way louder than the audio that was posted in the slap thread. No problems yet with 20k on it. Just sounds like hell on startup. Any cold start below about 55 degrees out I get the noise. You do not have to bend an ear listening for it. It is there. With the windows closed and radio on you can still here it. Ford says it is normal. I'm waiting to see the statement from Ford.

The various components of the engine (including heads) have build dates around 12/15/99. My father's is late 10/99.
The build date of the "truck" is 01/00.
I'm with Farmboy re: noise vs temp. It's been in the low 70's here at night and the noise is extremely faint. Back in Jan. & Feb., the noise was very pronounced. Even my wife noticed it!

Your engine noise experience sounds all too familiar only mine was with the GM. My wife heard my GM trucks noise too. It has to be like marbles in a can for her to notice. Her GrandAm has had noisy lifters since it was new and she never hears them. She heard my former GM truck's noise right away.
I hope and pray for better luck from this F150. My F150s build date was 3/00. Not sure about the engines build date. The truck was assembled in Norfolk. I hear the quality is best coming out of that plant than here in my local area of Kansas City. I hope they are right.
