Well I guess I will join the list. I have a 2000 xlt with the 5.4
It just turned 10k. It taps like a lifter that has not primed. The tapping last for about a 2 min at start up. When you give it some gas it goes away but when in idles down it is even louder.
I had a neighbor come out of his house and ask me what that noise was. All my friends that hear it stand back and wait for something to fly apart.
The temp here has been around 73 or so. I find if it sits for about 5 hours or so without running it makes the noise again on start up. The mfg date on the engine is 11-8-99. Motorcraft filter is beening used.

With lows in the 70s, the noise is quite faint. Temps in the low 60s will still yield the painful sounds of rattle. It may be October before we see those kinds of temps again.
I'm hoping a few more thousand miles will help... not likely, but I can dream!
