Jacobs vs MSD ignition
It seems that everyone who's upgraded their ignition has a Jacobs system. Are they better than the MSD's?

I use the MSD-5 ignition on my 96 truck. It is simply an enhancement to the stock ignition that gives multiple sparks instead of just one but only below 3600 rpm. The MSD-5 is inductive, not capacitive discharge like the really good ones but who needs that for a mostly stock engine? It only costs about $100 and installs quickly. My gas mileage went up by about 3 mpg and for all you tree huggers, my CO emissions went to zero after putting it on. I have noticed slight power gains with it on but not enough to say it is a "performance" upgrade. That's my experiences with the MSD ignitions, hopefully someone else will give their cut on the Jacobs models so you can choose for yourself.

I put a MSD into my old boat that had a Merc 350. Engine had over 700 hrs. of heavy load (full throttle is the only way to get there!). I was very impressed with the amount of improvement the MSD gave me. Engine ran smoother, much better throttle response, higher max RPM, gained about a 1/2 hour per tank (approx. 10%). This was an old and abused engine that had a lot to gain, a newer auto engine wouldn't see all this. I don't know about any of the specs or how the system works, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another MSD.
I have a MSD 6A on my 1993 F-150 and I absolutely love it. I looked at a Jacobs Mileage Master system, but the price discouraged me from it. In all honesty, the Jacobs system probably is better.
Do any of the any the MSD ignition boxes work with DIS engines, besides the MSD DIS-4, which is only a little cheaper then the Jacobs. The MSD-5 ignition does sound a little better suited and more affordable for a near stock engine and daily driver, but will that one work with the later DIS engines?

Msd does have a DIS Ignition but you have to cut into the electrical wireing on the 1997 and up engines (from what I could find out). I got the jacobs. Shop around as you have probably already seen in other message boards...

just a reminder, folks, to call Summit at 1-800-230-3030 for a good price on Jacobs DIS box--abourt 50.00 less than MSD--you MUST use a DIS box on 97 & up--can't use others.
