Supercharged finally
Hey fordman, i like to move my hp/torque band around on my blown dodge. i got rid of my flowmasters and put twin supertrapps on the exhaust tips. they each have 10 removeable discs that you can add/remove for: sound/low end torque/hp, to your liking. got them from summitt
MRBBQMAN,
I use Supertrapp's on my motorcycle and they are incredibly loud. Hows the sound from your duals on your truck. Did you get 4 or 5 inch discs? What is the length of the muffler? Sorry for the questions but I have wanted to put supertrapps on a vehicle for a long time but I could never find anyone who used them and could verify that the sound is loud but still leggal.

Bones, i have dual 4" x 19.5" ss trapps. i have headers, no cats, no mufflers. the trapps are the only sounder deadener. with all the discs "in", it's pretty loud. louder than the flowmasters. i usually go with 5 discs in each, for the street. it gives me good backpressure, has a good sound, and doesn't attract too much attention.
Fordman,
I am glad to hear that you have your truck back! However, I am disappointed to hear that Kenne Belle had to lower your boost output to 4lbs. This no doubt, was their fix to prevent that detonation that you were experiencing. My supercharged Bonneville runs around 8 - 9 lbs of boost without a intercooler and no detonation. However, the engine has a 8.5:1 compression ratio and that makes a big difference. I am still a firm believer in the use of intercooling to help offset any detonation effects, without sacrificing boost and HP. Have Fun!

Fordman, Glad you got the truck back and running. My Kenne Bell is getting on a average about 8 pounds of boost full throttle pending on the air. I have seen higher and lower. 4 sound a little low though. What did the guys that installed it say about that?? Let us know what happens.

Fordman, I also have the kenne bell blower on my truck. I have not got a boost gauge yet but maybe your problem is the boost gauge tube conection. The supercharger itself has a set output to an extent with the pulley size and throttle position/engine rpms. Adding a chip probably would not lower boost unless it lowered your max rpms or throttle possition...I doubt it is because of this. The high altitude also may have an effect on boost along with not enough backpressure. I had straight pipes and headers and lost a fair amount of power because of little backpressure. I went back to a muffler and felt a good bit of difference. Hope this helps.
After 2.5 weeks, the Kenne Bell is finally on. I think it was worth the wait, it runs great. Couple of questions for anybody out there... 1. I only can get 4 pounds of boost, even pulling the boat, 4 pounds, that's it. Is this normal? 2. My exhaust is headers, factory cats, "racing glasspack" (whatever that means), and dual outs. They want me to get a different muffler with more back pressure. ANY suggestions? I went through hell with my Cobra and exhaust systems before getting it right.
thanks for any help.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't the boost on a supercharger regulated by the pulley size? If the blower has a large pulley, then it has less boost, if it has a smaller pulley, then it has higher boost? I too am interested in getting blown, but i'm worried about the cost factor of the supercharger, compared to the performance increase and risks of detonation.
What is the good combination to use with a supercharger to achieve high HP and speeds. My goals are for the 1/4 mile.

I thought the Kenne Bell put out 6psi also?!
Pulley size does effect the amount of boost the sc can put out, but as my wife says, size does matter, hehe! Fordman, glad to hear your getting "blown" now!

Dear Members,
As has been posted here, it is also my understanding that the size of the pulley on the supercharger does effect the actual amount of boost possible with the supercharger. However, most superchargers come with what is called a "waste gate" whose purpose is to regulate the intake manifold pressure. Too much pressure will cause detonation and burnt pistons, so even if you were to further overdrive your supercharger (smaller pulley) the "waste gate" would regulate your intake manifold pressure. Usually, the use of the smaller pulley is to allow for coming up on boost faster in the lower RPM ranges, however the "waste gate" will regulate the total pressure allowed in your intake manifold. If your Kenne Bell has this (which I hope it does) it probably has been set for only 4lbs of boost due to the detonation that your engine was suffering from IMHO.

From what I understand Fordman only sent his chip back not the whole blower. So the boost should be the same as before b/c there was nothing altered on the blower. The air density at high altitude can play a big part in reducing performance and boost. If you ever go to lower altitude you will most surely notice a big difference in performance. I have heard the newer (99 and up) require a chip with the KB blower. My 97 is running without one and it is running great. What size engine and gears do you have Fordman?

Wow! Fordman, 2.5 weeks for the blower installation? Did you put it on yourself? I had a shop (recomended by KB) put mine on and, I had it back in two days. Regarding boost, the pully on the blower is the ONLY variable factor. I have a 7psi pully on my 5.4 and guess what? I get 7 pounds boost. I installed JBA headers, a dual in-out flowmaster and kept the stock cats. This proved to be a bit loud for my tastes so, i put a pair of 22" glaspacks in front of the Flowmaster. Only after doing all of this did I learn that the Ford factory exhaust is tuned so well that the only improvement you get from aftermarket exhaust is sound. Performance actually suffers except at top RPM where you get a couple of HP back but, I don't spend much of my time at 4500+ RPM so, I'm researching a better exhaust option or, going back to stock all together.
Thank God that preimum fuel has gone down from the $2 a gallon neiborhood price because, as I'm sure all of you know that after installation of the KB supercharger, ya gotta run 92 octane or risk leaving critical elements of your engine on the blacktop.
I'm currently running the Superchip suposedly optomised for the supercharged 5.4. I have been promised a chip from Kenne Bell custom for my Expedition (for about a year now) but everytime I try to get those guys to make good on their promise, all I get is a speach on "how busy we are" or, "we have a new project in the shop" etc... This is the only quarel I have with Kenne Bell. I did my homework and the KP supercharger is the best out there but, the chip KB produces is optomised for THEIR blower. They have done extensive work on fuel tables etc. that is missing from other chip manufacturers products. I WANT MY CHIP!!!!
I do not like the way Superchip trys to manhandle my transmision. I'm going to get the transmission built to operate the way I think it should (rubber on the road between 1st and 2nd gear with pedal to the medal).
I drive between Los Angeles and Las Vegas weekly, usially in the middle of the night and believe me, my '99 expedition loves to cruise at 105 mph and with the limiter out of the picture, can (and has) hit 135, a big chunk of metal to be propelled at those speeds. Don't get me wrong, I drive in the wee hours to avoid traffic and i NEVER pass at those speeds. I drive fast but, I drive VERY carefully when other vehivles come in to play.
So, there's my two cents.

I thought the pulley was the only thing that controlled boost also. The truck is back in the shop today to check everything out. A Gibson muffler was recommended, so I ordered one of those (those things are over $100!) so we'll see if that improves things. Otherwise, I'll start putting up a fuss with KB for more boost.

Dear Members,
From my earlier post, I mentioned about the use of a "wastegate" to control the overboosting of your intake manifold. I was obviously mistaken in my assumption that Kenne Bell uses this device. My Pontiac Bonneville which has a superchager from the factory does have this device to prevent overboosting of the intake manifold. Based on this I assumed the Kenne Bell also used this technology...I was mistaken.
