Angry Gas mileage

I've got a 2000 F-150, 5.4, 4X4, Extended cab Lariat and the gas mileage pretty much sucks. I go a little over 300 miles to a full tank. So far I have a tonneau cover, borla cat back, and a K&N Drop in filter. What else can I do to improve the gas mileage a little bit? Also, Does Hellwigg make a sway bar for my truck? I can't take leaning into turns anymore . Thanks.

Quit mashing the pedal to hear the borla!

You didn't say what actual MPG is, but if you're getting 300+ before fillup, you're pretty much in line with the average. I have the 5.4 and 3.73 and get 14 -16 consistantly, mixed driving. Not superb, but as much as I put my foot into it and a truck as big as this, it's not too bad. I know people with v6 Explorers getting 15.

I get around 16 and I am happy with it knowing this thing is a big truck with a big v8. My brother in law has a standard cab dog ooops I mean dodge with a 318 and he is lucky if he gets 13 so I have no complaints with 16

STWater....you ask what size tank is in your truck and you complain about the milage. Do you know what your milage is? You obviously don't know how much gas is takes to fill the tank...

It doesn't sound like you are too far off average. You never said what the milage was all you said was I get 300 miles to a tank. How much is left in the tank when you fill it up. How many gallons does it take to go that 300 miles ?

I've seen people with performance mods think that they'll get better milage when in the real world they get worse. They like the added performance and keep their foot in it thus making the problem worse.

I never let my truck much below 1/4 tank before I fill it. I make 300 miles most of the time. I hardly ever get worse that 15/16 unless towing. On the highway I get 18 or better.... No performance mods at all just easy driving on properly inflated tires. 3.55 rear end.

I WISH!!!
I have a 98 SC w/ 4.6L, 4x4, 3:55L gears
It's got 45k on it. It drives mostly highway with no towing(yet) my mileage was 13.5 until my last trip to the dealer, It Pings like hell, they reprogrammed the computer, (it still pings) now it gets 12.5mpg and doesn't have the power it used to. HOW'S THAT???
The only mods on this thing are a tonneau, bug deflector, and step bars. Are those things costing me gas mileage? I think not.

Can someone please tell me what size tank is in my truck ? I know I let the tank get down to right about Empty. Then I filled it up and it took a little more than 21 gallons and I went a little over 300 miles. I'm really not trying to complain about this and sound like a baby. I'm just trying to find out ways to improve gas mileage. Thanks.

BTW... I probably should lay off the gas a little bit, but the Borla exhaust sounds soooooo good at WOT .

I believe you have a 25 gallon tank, or something close to that. When my low fuel light comes on, I can put in about 21-22 gallons. Hope it helps...

FWIW, I average 17 mpg, and often see 400 miles on a tank, but I drive a lightly different rig - see sig.

you have a 25 gallon tank. if you want to double check in your manual it will tell you. IF anything your tonnaeu should be helping your gas milage. In some cases it reduces the air resistance on the tailgate and makes for a smoother ride through the air.

I believe the sc/sb in 4x4 has a 24 gallon tank. We have the same config.

Cool BAD MPG

I can’t complain, I’m getting 17.5 to 18 mpg around town/highway with 2 people on board and a/c running. Your 12MPG ( 300/25=12) sounds like it’s not running right.

Your 12 mpg is about right if you drive around town much. Do you drive with your AC on this time of year? I don't know of anyone except that guy in New Jersey!

Actually, he said "it took a little more than 21 gallons and I went a little over 300 miles" - that's more like 14.5 mpg, right at average for this truck. I wouldn't worry too much about getting the average. There are a few other things you can do, but the end result will probably be .5 to 1 mpg better:

Keep your foot out of it.
Keep your tires properly inflated.
Keep your foot out of it.
Chip it. This will require premium fuel, so you may end up spending more $ on gas.
Oh yeah, keep your foot out of it.

My truck seems to be getting better gas mileage with age. I'm averaging around the 14.5-15mpg range. I just ran a full tank with the 4wd system on, and hit 12.5mpg. Proportionally, what do you guys figure you should be getting? Just to make a comparison, the Toyota Tundra with it's "superior" 4.7L DOHC Lexus engine, is suppose to be the most efficient drive train in a fullsize, but can only pull off 14-15mpg. The 5.9s, 5.4s, 5.3s, and 4.7s are all getting around 13-16mpg. If your dropping below 10's, I'd say there's a problem.

Thumbs up I'd be happy with 14.5mpg

But I'm more happy with the lift and big tires! I get about 11 mpg's now. Oh well, I guess that's what I have to live with, not that I'm complaining.
