Post Perfomance of a 5.4

Ok basically I purchased a 2000 F-150 ext cab 4X4 with the off road package and the 5.4 to pull around my race car. I have my wifes father who just purchased a 2000 chevy ext cab 4X4 with the 327ci displacement engine who says that it will walk all over the Ford truck. I have road in his truck and I will admit that it does move for a chevy. What do I need to do to keep up with his truck or even pass it up? Any help would be appreciated, just to wipe that smug smile off of my father in laws face would be worth alot.

Thanks,
Bill

silver4x4,

The new Chevy 5.3 engines are formidable at 285 hp. A SuperChip would even the field since you are outgunned by 25 hp. You may wipe the smile from your father-in-laws face without one but I am not sure. Your 5.4 engine is a good one and responds well to a performance chip. Both trucks are similar in size and weight.

I have not tested my 4.6 l SuperChipped engine against the upgraded 5.4 260 hp or the Chevy 5.3 285 hp and don't want to. It would not be a pretty sight.

The contact for SuperChips is below. You will like Mike Troyer for his knowledge, patience and customer service. You won't be disappointed.

About a year ago, Truck Trend dynoed the 5.4 and the 5.3 and the Ford cranked out 27! more hp at the rear wheels. Don't believe Chevy's numbers. Go head to head with the old man in stock form!!

I'll bet if you both loaded the trucks down equally, you'd pull away from him.

The Chevy might feel faster, but I think the actual track and dyno figures paint a different picture.

One caveat to the above. It's out the window if you don't have similar rear end gear ratios.

I did the 'airbox mod', and this gives a noticable improvement. I just ordered my superchip, and Mike is one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever spoken to about a product they sell. He will take the time to answer all of your questions. The 5.4 is a quick engine, but I drove my buddie's Z71 a few weeks ago, and I wouldn't put money on which truck would win.

Cool

Don'k know much about empty drag racing -- but I used to enjoy passing 'rocks' on up-hill runs while both of us were pulling trailers (travel) with my '97.

With a few more ponies, 4% more torque, and 5% more gearing, I expect about the same with my Y2K against the new 'rocks'.

Pulling the trailer is where it separates the men from the boys -- wait until you're both pulling to see where the Ford torque adds up (p.s.: let us know, ok?).

(E.W. - We've got the same truck)

You might can take him STOCK
Remember Ford has more HP at the wheels (where it counts) than Chevy dispite higher HP enigine ratings.
There's only one way to find out

BE CAREFUL guys! My place of employment operates a 99 Silverado and a 2000 F150. Both trucks have the same set-up except for gearing. The Chevy was available with 4.10's; the Ford 3.73's. Both are extended cabs with the "big" V8's (5.3 and 5.4). The chevy is stock and my Ford has mods, see below.
The Chevy is much faster, loaded or unloaded. Trailer or no trailer. It's just plain faster. We work on an Airport with a 5000 foot runway were we "compare" the trucks.
The Ford gets Terrible gas milage as compared to the Chevy but, the Chevy has had some SERIOUS quality problems. So bad that we won't own it much longer.
My 2 cents.

Cool

Willie,
Gears make all the difference in the world. You have to compare apples to apples.

Thanks for all of the replies to the post. My truck has 3.55's I think his does also but I could be wrong. I went ahead and tinkered with the truck this weekend and removed the air silencer (which is a pain to get the hose off), and probably will stick a chip in it in a week or so. Other than that I may go ahead and step up to 3.73's. Like I said the chevy just felt a little stronger, but then again it was from a roll around 45mph or so. I wouldn't trade off the looks of my truck or the ride height compaired to the chevy and the quality/comfort. Again thanks for the replies.

Exactly....put some 4.10's in the back of that F-150..and then things would be much different.

*****...I am assuming you are racing your F-150 against the 99 Chevy...is the chevy a 4x2 or 4x4? With all of the mods you have on your F-150 with the chevy still being stock...you say the chevy is still much faster?? All of the major truck reports prove otherwise. You are putting out more horsepower and torque than him...so it should not be a blow out at all...unless maybe he is a 4x2. Also..what size tires do you guys have?

Very interesting.

*****, go and read about Neal the Freak in the chip forum. He put 4.10 gears in his truck and he's blowing away most everything on four wheels. Gears make a major difference.

silver4X4,

Sorry...I don't buy into his notion that it will walk all over the F-150. Not a chance. We are talking only 25 HP..the FORD still puts out more torque. He will only be able to perform better at higher RPMs.

As others have mentioned..the F-150 has been reported time after time to put a good deal more torque on the ground than the chevy..and that is what you need to get up and go. HP is NOT what gets you up and going.

Put a Superchip in it without him knowing..and you will more than kick his butt!

Have fun...make him a FORD believer!!!!
