Question 84 F-150 Rebuild

I have a 1984 2WD, 302, automatic F-150 that I just pulled the engine out of. I am going to rebuild it and I am looking for recommendations on how I can get some cheap torque out of it. I am going to eliminate all of the smog stuff, add Flowtech 1.5" headers, and possibly port the heads. Will the mustang E7TE heads match up with the F-150 2 barrel intake manifold? Any cam recommendations? This truck is purely used as a tow vehicle, so the more stump pulling torque I can get the better.

Thanks!

Does your truck have a computer controlled ignition system? I think some of them did. If it has the Duraspark II ignition system, then you don't have a computer. The reason I ask is the only way you will get some serious power increases out of your smog choked engine, it to do away with the computer, smog junk (if you can get away with it), and add a performance camshaft, and 4 barrel carb.

If you are on a budget, consider this: get a rebuilt longblock for a 1987 or newer Mustang 5.0. With it you will get: better heads, higher performance camshaft, roller lifters, and (I think)forged pistons. You will need to obtain a steel distributor gear to put on your distributor (your cast gear will NOT work with the roller cam). Put an Edelbrock Performer 289 (non EGR) intake with a 4 barrel carb. It will be a different truck!

It has the Duraspark ignition module on it, but I don't think it has a computer of any kind, and all of the smog stuff is coming off. What does the edelbrock intake cost? What 4-barrel and cam would you recommend?

Thanks.

My 83 had the duraspark system. What a hunk of junk. Go with a MSD or Jacobs. Better system. I rebuilt its 302, top half, ran great, ran a 2bbl Holley. 85 was the first year for efi and eec-IV on the 302. I would suggest getting a intake and carb combo, cheaper that way.
