Question 5.4 or Supercharged 4.6 ?

Wuts up everyone!? Ive been reading for months and finally decided to join. This is my first post so here gos.......
My dilema is that I love my truck but it just does'nt have enough power.I do have the Goodyear 305's so it slowed me down a little bit and I know that gearing down the rear end and throwing in a chip will help. But I don't think it'll be enough. Should I keep my ride a supercharge? Or dump it and get a 98-99 5.4? If I do supercharge, should I be concerned about the added stress on my tranny?
Thanks for any replies

Welcome to the board!

I think I can answer your questions.

To begin with, There are a few blown trucks here in DFW, and after riding in them and driving them, the answer is clear! GET BLOWN!

You will spend much more upgrading to a new 5.4L, and you will STILL need a blower to keep up. There is much more potential in the 5.4L, but you are asking for a choice, not both.

Myself and a couple of others are going to be ordering Magnacharger kits. It is a roots type. The kit is designed to work within stock parameters, is intercooled, and is designed for extended highway use. Reliability is a non-issue, and IF you can keep your foot off the LOUD PEDAL, you will see better economy!

If you do decide to go up to the 5.4 get the 2000 model with 260 HP.

Welcome aboard Roadrage.

I have the 4.6L and love its smooth operation and gas mileage. I have added all the cheap HP mods(see signature below) to get more hp out of the engine and it has paid dividends. I have debated and wrestled with this very same issue. After many days of deliberation I am at the point where my next investment will be a SC. However, I am still torn between the Roots type and centrifugal super chargers. Roots type will give the power down low, but puts continuous stress on the engine. The Centrifugal doesn’t stress the engine at low rpm’s but only gives added power above the 2500rmp range. I like the thought of having the power when needed and the centrifugal costs less. Just my .02 worth.

Roadrage,
Here is what i would do, Put in 4.10 or 4.30 gearing in the rear end. It will make the world of difference. I never thought it would until my fathers new excursion kept up with me. It was kinda scary. Granted he does have the 6.8L, I've seen tests on them and the 0-60 times were very slow. I found out the reason my dad's is so fast is because he has gearing somewhere in the 4.??'s. This would be what I would do.

For the street and 4X4 applications, you are looking for more power in the lower end of the RPM range. The roots type is the way to go.

The power band is much wider and flatter than a centrifugal compressor. You will have instant boost (no spool-up).

On the above kit, power peaks around 5200RPM and torque peaks at about 1200RPM.

Hey cphilip; On that "2000 model with 260 HP"... I thought Ford up the power in 99. No?

Would be nice to find a Navagator 5.4 32V motor, but the junk-yards in Fla never heard of that. Semper Fi

Like I said, the potential is there on the 5.4L. The Lighning is unreal!

I wanted to post this yesterday, but I needed to double check the graphs...

With a Magnacharger installed:

4.6L AUTOMATIC
  • POWER- 240 RWHP @ 5000RPM
  • TORQUE- 480 FT/LBS @1000RPM

5.4L AUTOMATIC
  • POWER- 275 RWHP @ 4300RPM
  • TORQUE- 500 FT/LBS @ 1000 RPM

See why I wanted to double check the graphs before I posted?

Talking

I faced the same problem. I went with the SVO Powerdyne unit. Pulls my 24" 5500lbs boat much better with it. I did lots of research on superchargers before I bought one
and the SVO supercharger was the only way to go for me. The Magnacharger is a nice kit but it is a lot more work to install and you have many more parts that will break that you have to worry about. And in my opinion is a lot harder on a motor than the Powerdyne. Plus with the Powerdyne if I want to sell the truck I can take it off in less than six hours and I am back to the stock setup. Not so with the Magnachargers. This kit has to many wires and tubes to cut to even possibly get your motor back to stock. Remember a 4X4 is not ment to be fast, I used to think so. However with all the mods I have done I am happy with the performance.

If you would like to talk Superchargers just respond with your email and we can talk.

Hey Gorp!

We are having a little get together in San Antonio in April, will you be able to make it? I'd like to get a closer look (and maybe a ride)!

Yes, the Magnacharger install is more involved, but if you are capable of swapping an intake manifold, you should have no problem. These intakes are very easy to swap.

Take a look at graphs for centrifugal vs. roots type (Eaton) blowers before you purchase.

Feel free to drop me a line as well. The link is below.

Crash1,

Do you know how much the Magnacharger is? I asked them in email but all they did was send me a brochure. I am thinking of getting the Magnacharger, Kenne Belle, or Powerdyne. I like the Magnacharger because of the intercooler and low end power, the Kenne Belle I've heard alot of good stuff about and the Powerdyne because its cheap even though its centrifugal I would consider it.

Cool

April issue of MM&FF does a complete review and buyers guide on superchargers. They even have the trucks listed. I might be able to pick up some extra cash on a side job, maybee I can get the wife to buy in on the SC idea.

Hey Gorp how long have you had youre SC and hows the low end vs the higher rmp range.
