Tune-Up Costs
No answer -- I'm wondering the same thing. It looks like pulling the engine and working on the floor or a stand might be easier than working with SONAR or whatever it must take to get to the rear of the engine. Keeping things clean without losing something appears almost impossible!

I'm not sure about the 4.6 & 5.4, but my friend took his 3.0 Taurus in yesterday for a tuneup & tire rotation. It cost almost $400 in the end. They charged him ~$90 for the tuneup labour, and tons of parts. All without calling him first to tell him what it costs.
If you do get a tuneup, make sure they have you approve the work first, or you could be in for a surprise.

I was wondering what going rate was for tuning up either a 4.6L or 5.4L engine? I have heard that costs can be rather high because the labor is rather intensive to service those engines.

Just out of curiosity, what is there to a tune-up? Other than plugs (and maybe wires) there doesn't seem to be anything else to replace or even adjust.

I had the wires replace for my engine. I cost me $160. Not even the plugs. $70 parts. $90 labor. I think I was screwed. Be careful.

Candu,
I heard that a complete 60,000 mile servicing cost a 5.7L Expedition owner $1100.00 Reason being the engine is so difficult to perform maintenance on, therefore the labor is high. So if you paid $300.00 consider yourself fortunate. One thing that I think is necessary every year is to get the fuel injectors removed and cleaned. Varnish and carbon deposites can build-up quickly and hamper engine performance.
Whatever, you do find a good mechanic, they can be like finding good doctor.

I have "tuned up" some 5.4L and 4.6L engines and it is no fun.The 5.4 is really bad, the coil on plug set up works very well although accessing the plugs is tough. I can see why the labor is high.
