Unhappy Dirty Engine!

Can anyone give me some advice on how to clean and restore some shine under the hood?
I got a 94Xcab. Thinking on taking it to one of those do-it-yourself power spray places and do it to it. Years ago I used a product called "GUNK", is there anything better on the market now?
Thanks!

I've always used Formula 409. If its really bad, you might consider using block degreaser. It turns everything white. But whatever you do, don't get it near the paint.

I use a product called GUNK. Or you can use Varsol. Brush it on liberally, but you have to protect electrical components when you rinse it off.

I don't use a high-pressure hose. I simply pout water on and wipe off. Maybe I'm paranoid about the electricals, but I've heard what they cost to replace (and what a pain it is to do it).

fomoco: I have a 1996 F-150 I-6. The engine is a clean or cleaner than it was when I purchased it new.

I have always sprayed it down completely, including all electrical componets, with silicone spray.

Whenever it gets to looking dirty, I drive to the car wash and plug in three quarters and use the wand with soap and then rinse and drive home. There I use my air compressor to blow off all excess standing water, then re apply a complete coating of clear silicone spray. The engine is clean and shinney. Also the silicone protects and preserves the rubber hoses and waterproofs the electrical parts.

I have never had any problem with my engine or electrical componets since day one by following this procedure. My engine stays clean enough to eat off of.

Fomoco, read your manual about what components you need to protect from water.

When I washed my engine a few months ago, I covered the electrical box on the driver's side, the air cleaner, and the alternator. I don't think the alternator was included in what needed covering, but I did it anyway.

You might try some Simple Green if it's available in your area. It works great on grease, dirt, etc. Its safe on most surfaces. Im not trying to sell the stuff but it works great.

I "Gunk'd" a perfect-running 95 Ranger and screwed up the idle and TPS. I suspect it's optical -- and got slimed.

Damned electronics will drive you nutz.

Steer clear of the sensors -- Gunk is great for everything else. Hose off with PLENTY of water.

Foaming 'scrubby bubbles' bathroom foam cleaner works great on dirty, but non-greasy hood and fenders.

Finish up with Rush Limbaugh's favorite: Clean Shower -- after rinsing to prevent spotting (works great on Goldwing engines too).
