Post V8 engines in F150's

Well today when I was at the post office this guy in his 86 F150 stoped to talk to me for a bit said I have a nice truck and was asking how much it cost and and how much power the engine had. As he plans on getting one but then he said that he heard that after this year or next you wont be able to get a V8 in a F150 anymore. I am just wondering if this is going to be true or not I just told him I haven't heard anything like that and wont believe it until I see it happen. It will be very sad if it does happen I'm sure truck sales would drop off big time if it happens.

You will still be able to get a V8 in 2001 but, that is the last year they will be available. After that you will have to move up to the Superdutys to get a V8. All F150's will have the V6 to include the Lightnings.

I read all about it in US News & World Report. It seems that the whole thing is related to Piston Slap. Ford has basically thrown up their hands. The 'word' is that every '97thru '01 V8 will eventually get piston slap, even the FQR engines are getting it. The only thing that is known for sure is that there hasn't been a single 4.2 V6 reported with Piston Slap and Ford has decided it's the only way to go. This was all kept very hush-hush because Consumers Report just released their annual Auto issue and Ford didn't want to get trashed by them but, you know how US News & World Report is, blab everything. Fortunetely, the CR auto issue has already hit the streets and the CR editors didn't know a thing about it.

In a nutshell Ford's said if you're driving an '02 or newer F150 and a Chevy comes up behind you, you better get out of it's way.

Well, I see this (removal of the v8 as an option) as highly unlikely..

My opinion on future direction, (not fact):
In the comming years, I think you will see the rise in popularity of diesel (the smaller v6) in trucks..
- For work trucks, torque is everything, and diesels have it.
- with general maintainance, the engines tend to last longer. (runs cooler, lower revs etc).
- Because of the low rpm nature, I think they can meet existing/proposed EPA standards easier with a diesel.

Thumbs down

I'll believe it when i see it. If the consumers demand a v8, then ford will make one.

I doubt very much about this unless Ford makes a boosted 400HP/800lb torque V6 4.2L, that can do 45MPG They might re-think the whole Triton engine thing and improve or just go back to the good old 302, 351 and 460 engines. Dodge still has the 318 and 360 so why not keep "proven" engines?

But with more critical MPG demand and emissions control maybe V6ers will be in greater demand. I see the death of the F150, when more and more people buy full size trucks for transporting the kids to school and so forth. That market doesn't care about towing strength, or big V8 sound... Remember how big the cars got before the end of the "big car" era. Even the small sweet mustang became a big (left blank). Do you think that car styling and engine sizes will follow a cycle?

But I, as every one eles, can't tell what the future holds. I have the V6 allready and like this small engine, so this news doesn't affect me much.

4byFord, I think your scenario is already taking place. F-150 is becoming the home commuting version and the super dutys are becoming the work horses. Case being the F-250 no longer available in the light duty line-up. I'm not trying to stir anything up, I just think this looks like what Ford is doing.

No V8, No Ford for me next time.
That's the primary reason I didn't consider the Tundra.
No V8 regular cab.
If Chevy and Dodge continue to have their V8's then Ford WILL loose a BIG market share INCLUDING myself.
IMHO V8 should be standard in a Full size truck anyway.
PLEASE tell me this is an Aril fools think or show a link to otherwise.

hey.....at least if it's true, they're admitting that they got some major **** to pile..........I've still got a slappy v8 that leaks 2-3L of oil/week.........7 months after I first brought it to a dealership.
hmmmmm if this is true mabye ford will get rid of the next worst thing for them. they'll start selling factory direct. lol
my biggest prob with ford isn't their lack of quality, but there lack of service.

If Ford can't make a V-8, then Aunt Jemima can't make a pancake.

You on something, Raoul?

This sure made my heart skip for a second! No way FORD will drop the V8 in the F-150 in the near future..but if they do..they will lose a ton of loyal owners.
