Superchips a disappointment
I have a 98 F150 4.6L. Just installed a Superchip and I am disappointed with the performance it is giving me. It said it would increase horsepower about 25H.P. There is no way it did,if any at all.I Followed the instructions to the tee. It was very simple to install.Does something like this take time, or is this all I get. If someone is has any information it would be greatly appreciated.
Rusty, where do you live, what elevation? I got the chip several months ago and was disapointed too. I live at 6000' and felt nothing, but the trans shifts firmer. I recently drove to calif. and WOW what a difference the truck REALLY came alive at sea level totally unbeleivable difference. But now im back in the mountains and the trucks a dog, feels like im pulling a trailer always, even with all my mods.

Try disconnecting your battery and resetting your computer, you might notice a a difference than, but mike told me it might take up to 1200 miles for the computer to get totally adjusted. Just an idea.

Thank for the info. I guess i will be patient and put some miles on my truck. Looking foward to the change.
Also if anyone has other info on changes that will increase h.p. I would appreciate it. By the way I live in New Jersey and I updated my profile.
Thanks,
Rustyfan

Rustyfan,
Be sure you got all the clear coat on the computer contacts off. I thought I had but had not and had problems. Once it was gone, drastic improvements. I'm at sea level though.

Hey rustyfan,
Since you disconnected your battery and drained the boards.... installed the Superchip. The computer goes through a learning process again and needs at least 500 miles to re-learn your driving habits with the Superchip. I've even heard 1,000 miles.
Some feel the better performance and added HP right away. Others have to wait for the learning process.
I've had mine for a month now and it feels even better than when I first installed it.
First and foremost, the Superchip is designed to increase "Performance" in city driving as well as on the highway. I'm sure in a little time you'll notice the difference the Superchip makes. It was a great mod. for me and feels even better now!
Welcome aboard.... this is a great site!

I have had 3 Ford trucks and a Superchip for each... Noticed improvements right away, to varying degrees. 2.3L engine had a bit of improvement, 4.0 engine did GREAT, and 4.2L have a bit of any improvement--more notable with towing, but not much faster unloaded.

I think this issue was diced over last year. If you were expecting your truck to become a fire breathing hot rod when you installed the Superchip then you had too high expectations. If you expected firmer shifts, higher revs, no spark retard when shifting, a few more horses and more torque then barring a bad chip you got just that. The changes come the longer the chip is in. I will tell you this. I hope I never have to pull my chip because I would hate for my truck to go back to the way it was. I didn't notice much of a difference on my WOT run right after I installed my chip but a month later i pulled out to pass a car and WOW! Just give it a little time. Good thing come to those who wait. Like a 1-2 shift barking the tires!
rustyfan,
I have been amongst the skeptical on this board regarding the SuperChip. I have seen, read, and heard both good and bad about it for a long time. However, I am getting awfully sick of this delayed 1-2 upshift on the automatic. I am about ready to give one a try. It seems unanimous that it improves the shifting on the automatics, if it does nothing else. It may be worth it when you put your foot in it. My truck shifts like a Crown Vic on the 1-2 upshift at WOT. Pisses me off.

Well I just pulled my chip for reprogramming and I absolutley can't stand that lame 1-2 shift now!!! I feel 40 years older driving it now. If I don't get it back in soon, I will have to dye my hair blue and park in the handicap spaces!

I was skeptical at first about the superchip..but I have had one in my 2000 5.4L for about 3 weeks now and it *DID* make a huge difference. It is certailnly money WELL spent in my opinion. The tranny shifts great. The power is immediate along with the shifting.
Last Friday I installed a Superchip in my friends 97 4.6L F-150...and it already made a big difference. We took it out and he noticed a big difference. He also had the typical 'grin' on his face and was "superfooting" it.
Like Mike Troyer has said in the superchip section...take it out and see if there is a noticeable difference.

I've had 2 chips because the first one was making my "Engine Light" come on.... On the 1st chip I noticed BIG gains immediately that took about 100 miles to get even better....On the 2nd chip I thought they gave me a bad chip... No gains niticed except for the shift improvement... Well 500 miles later the damn thing keeps improving just as the 1st chip did! The more I drive it the better it gets!
Give it chance!
Give it chance!
