engine problems ( 5.4 )
I'm on my second 5.4 in my 99 f-250.
It was replaced because of cold
weather start up knock at 20k.
After two weeks the NEW 5.4 blew
a plug out of the cylinder. This
happened 4 weeks ago and I still
don't have my truck back!
The dealer and customer service
said the heads are back ordered until
mid march. that 5.4's are swamping
them with problems.
Has anyone else had these same
problems and these are not the only
ones I had. thanks.

I've only had my mine for 2 months (2500 miles). So far, so good.
Hope things work out for you.

I too have had mine for maybe two months but I've got every problem in the book.
Pings badly on reg. gas
Not one, but TWO oil leaks
infamous rough idle
11 mpg at the VERY MOST
a stupid tranny that can not figure out what gear it wants to be in
engine knock on startup
I was tould that the engine knock is likely not piston slap, but probably a warped/damged flywheel.
Given my own expeiences and the 5.4 track record of problems I think that Ford really messed up in designing this engine.
Most of the problems are not due to build quality but design flaws.
Many people compliment me on my truck but when they ask how it runs and if I would recommend the 5.4 over the 4.6 (seeing as I own both) I never recommend the 5.4
It is more powerful, but it revs about the same as the 4.6 during every day driving, and if you have to tow a small to med load I'd just put a good tranny cooler on the 4.6 , it should do just fine.
If Ford hasn't got the bugs out of this engine in 4 years, then sorry to say but its probably because they can't.
A very poorly engineered engine in my opinion.

So far..I have owned two 5.4L engines (98 and 00) Not a single problem at all. No leaks..no chatter (except that darn FRAM filter I put on once - 98), no rough idle..NOTHING! I have driven a total of 22,000 miles on my two engines...mostly city driving..no problems.
I highly recommend the 5.4L!

Even though I had the oil leak at the psgr rear head. (Motor replaced @ 12k) I still think this is a great motor! Wards picked it as one of the 10 best V8's in a vehicle under $50,000.00 all three years. It runs like a top. If it were as wide spread as the number of units sold you would hear about it on your local 5:00 o'clock news.

My 5.4 23,000 miles has been run hard and put out wet! No problems...At 5000 miles exhaust was changed and it relieved most of the factory back-pressure in system. Maybe a cheap problem solver for the oil leak around heads or I just have a good motor like most f-150 owners. I love the way it runs nice and strong yet can't endorse the 5.4 until it gets me to the 100,000 mile mark with no major internal problems. Ford seems for the most part to take care of any engine problems so I'm not to worried! Good luck with yours! Capt.

I had mine for over a year now, 20,000 miles+, and no problems yet, hopefu;;y there will be none. Mine has the start up knock when its cold but I think thats just the way these engines sound. I also drive it pretty hard since I put in the superchip.

Sorry to hear that you are having such difficulty with your 5.4L engine. I have close to 36K on my 1998 5.4L Triton and I have not had a single problem. I also tend to drive it hard, and it has always been willing to rev. I do however take very good care of the engine using Mobil 1 and Motorocraft filters, as in Arizona, heat will kill your engine.

I'm also sorry to hear about your troubles. I have a 98 F-250 Light Duty with 5.4 (38,000 miles) and besides never getting higher than 12 mpg, I have nothing to complain about. I pull a 3500 pound Jet boat around all summer and a 23 foot trailer across the state deer and elk hunting. As far as maintenance I just change oil (Valvoline) every 3,000 miles and I put a new fuel filter in every 20K. I'm putting my superchip in today and getting a Bassani cat-back exhaust next week - hope those don't mess things up for me! Good luck with your engine repair.
As you can see by my name, I am not a happy camper. Just left the dealership after refusing to have the engine replaced on my 5.4L expy. Engine has 15,000 on it now but I brought it back at 800 miles for piston slap. They said no problem and now it is so loud that they cannot deny it any longer. I don't want a new engine. I want my money back. I bought a 33,000 dollar vehicle new and I can't swallow the fact that it needs an engine. We are at an impass.
lemonford..best of luck in your case..but I seriously doubt you will get your money back! A *new* (not FQR) engine might not be all that bad!!

Hate to say it but I have hired an attorney and will take this as far as it will go. We have the right to expect that a vehicle will not need a new engine as soon as we drive home don't we?
