Cam gear on a 95 F-150
What's up everyone? I'm new to the community but am a member at Contour.org (have a 98 SVT). Just droppin by to find out an answer for my father who just bought a 1995 F-150 with the 4.9L inline 6. He wants to know if the cam gear in this motor is steel or if it is a nylon-type material. He says the late 80's and early 90's 4.9L motors had a nylon-type gear that was prone to failure. I did a search and turned up nothing year-specific. Any information would be much appreciated!

I have replaced many timing gear sets on 4.9L fleet vehicles over the past few years, and none of them had nylon gears. BUT, the newest one was a '91 or '93, I'm not sure which. I have a '95 4.9, but I've haven't had to change the gears yet. BTW, the average mileage on the 4.9L fleet vehicles I changed gears on was between 225k and 250k+ miles, and they continue to run well to this day. The 4.9 is arguably the best engine Ford made. Go to the Pre 1997 message board and view the thread there asking about the 4.9. Someone recently asked about them, and there are several replies. As far as a honest answer to your question, call your local Ford dealership. They should be open any time now, and will be able to tell you.
