Post What is best oil filter?

What is the best oil filter to use for the 5.4/6.8? I have used mostly motocraft until now but plan to do a change this weekend and dealer is closed. I was using motocraft 'cause the dealer parts guy told me that Ford has a pattented "Anti Backflow Valve" that makes oil more available on startup. Are there other good brands that have this?

Thanks!

Dean

I agree with Marv1..stick with the Motorcraft filters. AVOID FRAM filters...when compared to the others..these are junk (from someone who use to use them for over 10 years and finally cut one open). The one time I installed a FRAM in my 98 5.4L engine...I experienced valve chatter at start up. After almost two weeks and thinking piston slap had finally started..I switched back..and the noise immediately went away...for good.

I use Motorcraft filters in my 2000 5.4L.

OK I see that you all LOVE the Ford filter, but I've used Fram for over 20 years on anything and everything I've own, bikes, cars, Vans...whatever, and had no problem at all from Fram...I saw a few years back that fram had a few bad filters...but should be fixed now. I understand that the Ford filter has a pressure valve in it and all that, I may start useing the Ford filter now that I've read so much on how BAD the Frams are but only on my Truck and not on my bikes thou.

Great Site Steve....keep up the good job!!

Its not that, The motorcraft filters are actually made by purolator. It is simply a superior oil filter, check out the link Marv1 posted, it'll change your mind forever

There has been a lot of discussion about oil filters on this site. Do an oil filter search, or check out the oil filter study at:

IMHO, I'd say stick with the Motorcraft. Marv

I believe the Pure One filter is the purolator filter that is comparable to the Motorcraft. Part number is PL24651.

Like you MotorcycleMan...I have used FRAM (and AC Delco filters) on all of our cars..without a single problem. Actually, I would say closer to 15 years of using these without a problem and ALL of my vehicles have been hitting around 150,000 or better before I get rid of them (with conventional oil also).

Like I said in my previous post...I will not use them again...until some internal changes are made and their quality is at least equal to all of the others. Shortly after I removed the FRAM off of my previous 98 F-150..I removed the FRAM from our Mazda 626. I will spend the exta 25-50 cents for a better product.

I have actually opened/used Bosch, Deutsch and Motorcraft filters (F-150)..and they seem to be of high quality (metal end caps and no platic anti-drain valve) and never experienced a single problem to date. The mobil-one filter has a metal anti-drain valve..but for $9.95 per filter...and as often as I change my oil and filter...the benefit is not worth the cost, for me.

Anybody ever have any problems with Napa Gold oil filters? I've always used themm because they have a check valve inside the filter. Do Motorcraft filters have a check valve?

The Motorcraft does have the anti drainback valve. I have a 4.2 F-150, and a 3.8L (pos) Taurus, so I use the Motorcraft FL-400S on both. The "S" is for silicone (valve). The NAPA is a fine filter also as it is made by Wix.

You know you are a true garage geek when you have 5 cases of oil and a minimum of 6 filters in the cabinet. ( so says the wife!!).

Oil and filters are cool, so CHANGE ON!!!!!

Question

What's the part number for the Motorcraft filter. I'm getting ready to change the oil the first time in my truck and I want to use a Motorcraft filter. The only problem is that the parts book at the auto parts only goes up until 1998 (pretty good, huh). I think it is the same part number, but I want to be sure. My truck info is below.
I don't really trust the people who work there (AutoZone). I figured someone here could help me out.

------------------
2000 F-150 XLT, 5.4L, 4x4, auto, Extended Cab, Deep Wedgewood Blue, 3.55, Towing Package, Sliding window, CD player, 4 wheel abs/discs, 255/70/16's, build date 11/99, bedmat, K&N Filter and more to come
