I heard that synthetic oil will cause engines to burn oil especially when miles go above 50K

What???, never heard of that! The reason why I switched to synthetic is because of my friends who own older (1983-1986) vehicles and ran synthetic in their engines and ended up with no problems. I use Castrol synthetic because, well, thats what my dealer uses and so do my friends. My truck is at 52,000km (32,000 miles) aprox. and going strong with synthetic. I change my oil every 6,000 miles and use only Ford oil filters.

NO WAY! I have never heard of a single case of synthetic oil causing an engine to burn oil once it hit 50,000 or more miles. That is completely not true! Where did you hear/read this??

Thumbs down

You got some bad info, we use synthentic oil in alot of your shop vehicles some have over 600,000 miles on them (diesel) they dont use any oil, my chevy truck that i had a wheil back i used mobil one in it i bought it used it had 97,000 on it when i switched and had over 132,000 when i sold it no engine problems at all, no oil usage, or leakage.

Iwould not use sythentic oil in my truck if i did not get it for free, i change my oil every 3000 miles, I think it works great but if you do your regular service's you will be fine. I used regular oil before and have gotten over 125,ooo miles with the same results, If you use your truck for severe service maybe sythentic oil is the way to go, but if you look up oil type or kinds here in the search tpoic you will find tons of info.

I've heard the same thing, hilltop. I think the reason for the rumor is that an engine wears faster with normail oil (depending on drain interval and driving methods), and a build-up develops that seals the engine. When the engine is flushed and synthetic is installed, those deposits are no longer present to seal the engine, and more oil subsequently gets into the combustion chamber. I don't know if that's true, it's just what I've heard.

One thing that switching to reg oil can cause is a leak that is due to the fact that regular oil have a swelling agent in them to insure good sealing property's. sythentic oil do not, this is not the fault of the oil if it leaks the sweeling agent makes the seal a little softer and switching can cause the seal to shirnk, switching back is your only cure we have ahd this happen on a couple differant occasions. m Slick 50 caused a major oil leak once it had 120,000 miles no leaks in a few days after adding the slick 50 it was laking so bad you had to add oil dailey we drained the oil and changed in it about a week it sealed up.
