Question Synthetic Switch Help

I want to switch to a full synthetic at the next oil change. (48,000) What do I need to do, if anything, prior to this? What type, viscosity and filter do you recommend? I have 47,500 miles on my truck that I bought at 43,600. I am hoping to improve gas mileage and quiet the cold start chatter that I have.

Thanks for the help!!!

5w-30 Mobil1 is what i use. I think the general consenus is Mobil1 or Amsoil. Other than changing the oil filter, there is nothing special you need to do to switch over to synthetic.

If i can make a recommendation: while changing the oil, use this opportunity to install a fumoto oil drain valve. Costs ~$25. Check it out at http://www.fumotovalve.com/

Thumbs up what synthetic

I use Mobil 1 with the Motorcraft filter & change every 5K. I see
you line in NY. The 0W-30 is a great new viscosity from M1. Or
the tried & true 5W-30.

I think you will see a little better mileage, especially w/0W-30.
I think the Motorcraft FL-820S (made to Ford specs by Purolator)
is a great filter for the $$. Only $3 at Wal-Mart here in Texas.
I also use a Motorcraft (FL-810) filter on my wife's '00 Maxima.

This is NOT necessary......

it's just what I do. I run a qt. of any eng. flush solvent in the cr/case for about 10 mins(whatever instructions say) before draining the old oil out. I fill with Mobil 1 5W30 and a silver can of RESTORE(it fills the microscopic 'wear' spots in the cylinder walls, etc.). Go to synthetic(Mobil 1) oil, whatever you do.

I do this to all my older, high mileage vehicles(86 Saab 9000Turbo-300,000 miles before she broke the motor mounts, 91 Z281LE-150,000 miles before sold--to race in A Sedan, 97 f150 xlt 4.6L-currently has 120,000 miles-bot used with 50,000 miles).

I use K & N oil filters.

Thumbs up Thanks...

Thanks for the info, I am going to go with the Mobile 1 5w-30 and the filter JEC reommended. However the Fomoto Valve may look like a good idea, but I spend too much time 4 wheelin on the beach and through trails to worry about a lever under my truck. Thanks for the suggestion though 98.
