Are the new Chevy V8's fast?

I have a buddy with a 2wd GMC extended cab with the 4.7L V8. Says he will lay the smack down on my truck. My truck feels like a turd and I am wondering if I should just let him keep talking and not pay any attention to it. His truck is an auto like mine.

my opinion: hate to say it but for the past 20 yrs, if you have a ford engine and same/close sized chevy engine, the chevy will consistently be faster. not what you wanted to hear...my suggestion is right before you race, if you can, put a couple of oranges in his tailpipe

If he has a 4.7L V8 he got cheated, it is supposed to be a 4.8L.

Unhappy Sad to say...

My brothers 2000 4.8L 3.55 geared Silverado 4x4 1500 dogs my 1997 F250LD 5.4L 3.73LS 4x4 off the line. But on a good stretch of road, he can't keep up. Guess I have a better passing gear than him. Plus 10 years of street racing over his 2.

02XLT,
Put 1,500 to 2,000 pounds in each truck bed, before you race. I think this will give you an advantage over him. Remember, Tritons generate more torque at Low rpm. GM's new V-8 generates torque at higher rpms.

My die-hard Ford buddy drives one at work, and can't stop yapping about how fast it is.

Take care,
-Chris

Yes the new Chevys are fast, faster than the Fords. BUT...only because they are a higher revving motor that will provide better unloaded acceleration. Hook equal loads onto a similarily equipped Ford and Chevy and the Ford will outpull it anyday.

Cool Chevy cars... I mean trucks

That's because Chevy thinks of ride quality over true truck performance. Fast like a car, rides like a car, must be a car. Where as Ford builds the toughest, strongest, best looking trucks on the road. I don’t need to hit a speed bump and have it feel like a Cadillac, if I wanted that I wouldn’t have bought a truck. All I know is that I can carry that Caddy over the speed bump while pulling a Silverado!!

Stock for stock, yes, he will beat you. Get some mods on your truck like a good cat back and a K&N filter, and it'd be a close call.

A little more info...

I have a 5.4 Supercrew and my boss owns a 5.3 Silverado. Both trucks are completely bone stock. Mine has 19k miles and his is around 3k miles. We both dynoed the trucks last Sat at work(it was slow) to see what they both were making. I was pretty dissapointed needless to say, but here are the results:

His - 241rwhp and 263rwtq. (About 300 crank hp)
Mine - 200rwhp and 269rwtq. (About 250 crank hp)

I'm actually killing him until about 4000rpms and he just flys by me on power. Those LS1 are so underrated. We also dynoed a bolt-on 5.3 truck. He had exhaust, headers, computer, air intake and it did 283rwhp. That's 350 crank hp after you do the math. Damn, I love my Supercrew, but I sure wished it had the 5.3 in it!

I tend to disagree with some of yalls opinions in a way, my 97 4.6l lariat can deal easily with basicaly any stock 305 or 350 til the vortecs, then i have a problem. they give me all i want but i have beaten most of them. i get them well off the line, mostly a truck and then they try to play catch up . sometimes they do but mostly they dont.

flowmasters

hey, mickeys97lariat I noticed that you have dual 40 series flowmasters. I am thinking about doing the same to my truck and I was wondering how they sound and whether they ever get on your nerves when you are in the truck, on a long trip for example. Thanks

I have a 2001 SC SB 4X4 v6 5 speed dead stock F150 with 3.55 gears and 12,000 miles. My buddy has a 2001 SC SB 4X4 4.8 5 speed Chevy with 3.73's, Flowmaster exhaust and K&N filter. He recently added 285 series tires which puts our gear ratios close. We raced on a deserted interstate stretch starting at 75 mph in fourth. I started at his rear bumper because I was following. By the time I hit the speed limiter at 98 mph, I was half a fender ahead. We then raced from a stop and we were dead even all through second gear at which point we let off. He was disappointed that my little old Ford six ran with his V8. Now, before this truck I had a Dodge QC Sport 4X4 with the 318 automatic, 3.55 gears. I raced a buddy with a new Z71 with the 5.3 and he annihialated me. Badly from any speed. But, the Dodge was a turd and it would only have been fair if I had the 360. I dont think it would have mattered. That LS1 is a great motor. I race them at the strip in my old school five liter Mustang.

Soopercrew,
Can you give us both trucks numbers under 4000rpm, like 2000 and 3000? I'm really curious because that's where I drive 99% of the time, even when I'm getting on it. Of course I want more power, but I want it where I drive day to day, not necessarily at the red line. Even the published 0-60 numbers don't give the whole story for me since I just don't mash the peddle to the floor until I get up to speed. I suspect the 5.4 is by far the superior engine in the lower RPM's. Thanks.
