Dangling open connector, what for?
'97 4.6L 4x2. I just noticed an open connector dangling down by the oil pan, can't figure out what its for. Its laying on the front crossmember, by the oil pan, on the drivers side front. Can be seen easily by crawling under the front. Its the second to the last connector on a wire harness, the last connector is the one-wire plug to the Oil Pressure switch. I can't find anything within reach that this open connector could go to. Everything works that I know of, seems strange to have an open connector there getting all grimy. Lengthwise, it could reach the Power Steering Pump, but there's no switch there, nor does one show up in the diagram.
Anybody else have one of these? Any ideas?

I think I have the same plug, but mine is next to the oil filter. I have front anti-lock brakes, so that isn't the connector. That wiring harness is a real pain in the a** when changing the oil filter. I can hardly get a wrench in there and when I do, I can only get 1/8" of a turn on the thing. My oil filter is located right next to the transfer case, unlike under the fender like somepeople have stated.

Most of the time it is called a dummy connector they try to use a harness on more than one application it saves them money i am not sure what you see but it is a possibilty.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with that "extra" connector. I have 4 wheel anti-lock, and it wouldn't reach over there. If they used the same harness on another setup (4.2 V6, 5.4L?) I wonder if the two pins on that socket are paralleled with something thats already in use on another connector. I hope not, as that open connector gets its share of rain & mud down there, don't need trouble down the road. If it has its own circuit that my truck doesn't use at all, then its a don't care.
Don't know what another engine would have thats way down there, to have a 2-pin socket for.
Thanks for the info, and if anybody has an idea, let me know.

Granpa, you sure do spend a lot of time UNDER your truck lookin' around. Seems like everytime I read a post from you, you just got done poking and prodding some nether region of your vehicle
I hope you spend as much time (and have as much fun) driving it...

Hey Granpa that connector you found goes to the power steering pressure switch. F-150's do not use a pressure switch. Expeditions and Navigators use a pressure switch as part of their air ride system. So Ford uses the same harness for the 4.6. Don't worry about it.
Thanks Fordfixer, that's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks to all for your interest.
JHerron, I think I have more fun poking, prodding, figuring out how stuff works and why. It's been a life-long, chronic disease, and is undoubtably terminal! When they carry me to the hearse for my final ride, I'll probably pop up and say something like "when was the last time you cleaned/inspected/repacked the wheel bearings?"
Please make it a Lincoln Hearse, not a Caddilac.
Or maybe there will be an F-150 Hearse version then. I want you all to know, that a F-150 will do the job, don't need an F-350 to haul me
