In for Timing Gasket Recall -- Now Need New Engine
I just brought my '97 150 in for the timing cover gasket recall (68,000 miles).
With in 6 days of the servicing the engine developed a rattling at high RPMs. My Ford Dealer say it's the crank bearing and crankshaft -- recommends a new engine.
Of course they see no relationship with the recall servicing.
The engine was loosing coolant slowly.
Any suggestions on how to verify if this damage was or was not related to the timing gasket failure/recall.
Thanks

I had the same exact problem. No engine noise/damage until after they fixed the recall on my truck. Dealership initially claimed it was not their fault the engine went bad. They had someone come in, listen to the engine, verify the noise was actually there and engine was damaged, and then Ford actually flipped the bill for all repairs. I had 70,000 miles on my truck. I don't know how to verify how the damage occurred but Ford did take care of my exact problem.

Glad to hear that FORD took care of you! That is what I am looking for if I ever have something go bad on my truck (i.e. DOOR CRACK).

Quick. Before they take your motor apart or before you change your oil, take a sample of your engine oil and send it off to a reputable lab for an analysis. If there's coolant in the oil, you've got a case for "contingent" damage caused by the leaking timing cover gasket.
If necessary, ask the dealership to take the sample for you so they don't hassle you later and say you contaminated the sample yourself.
Anybody know of a good lab close to our colleague, here?

My third F-series: '73 F-100, '98 F-150 and '00 F-150. Great trucks!

I set up the field lube sample program for the company I work for a dozen or so years ago -- and used two places for the samples -- Lubricon and Cleveland Technical Center. Lubricon is located in the SouthEast corner of Indianapolis. A quick search on the web turned them up at: http://search.constructionnet.net/pr...153203200.html
Good luck.

I've got 54,000 on my 97 4.2V6 now is in the shop for still leaking after timing cover recall was done, truck still in the shop waiting for them to tell me what is wrong with it. You say that Ford paid the bill for you....how can I get them to pay for mine??? I'm guessing here...I'll say the head gasket is bad or worse...engine block cracked or heads cracked.
After some talks with the Ford through the local dealer (and reference to the above post where FORD repaired the engine), FORD has agreed to pay for the engine repairs on mine.
Now to find the parts. Crank and bearings are on back-order.

I heard on the news that FORD just recalled a bunch of cars and vans for faulty engines(various years and models)...offering to pay up to $8,000 per vehicle.
How <generous> of them...but better than nothing I guess.
