If I remember correctly, the carbureted versions from the mid '70s through the '80s were 150 horsepower. Chevrolet brought out there 4.3L Vortec in pickups back in about '83 and lorded it over everyone that their six was better because it made 165 horsepower versus the 4.9L/300 c.i.d.'s 150. Ford switched over to EFI and boosted horsepower up to 160 making Chevrolet's claim of 5 more horsepower a moot point. Then Chevrolet came out with the Vortec heads for their engines in the '96 model year boosting their six to 200 horsepower, giving them something to brag about. A few months later Ford introduced the 4.2L. I've got to say, I do like Chevrolet's 4.3L, though. From '65 to '67, ford's 300 made 170 horsepower and from '68 to '71 it made 165.

emissions? Did that kill it in the 80's?
What do you think Ford will do when Gm brings out it's new 6 cylinder? I have heard it will be another "v" but I have heard it will be a inline too.
