BLOWN OUT FROST PLUG!!!!!!
HI!... Well guys today when I was sitting at a red light my truck started to steam everywhere. I managed to drive it to a buddy's house. I found out that my block heater frost plug had blown out and was hanging there. Apparently the rubber "O" ring got torn and caused it to fall out. So I called the FORD emergency # and a flat bed tow truck showed up. I had it towed to my dealer and that is where it sits at this moment. Has anyone else had this problem too.I know a lot of LIGHTNING's around here have had the same problems, but this is the first regular F-150 that I have heard of with this problem. Any help on this problem would be great.

Neal,
Sounds to me that whoeveer is installing these frost plug heaters is screwing up. The lightnings don't come with factory installed frost plug heater so if they are comming out it is not fords fault.

HI!... FORDMAN : Thats exactly what I did. Put a new one in and then drove 3 blocks and it blew out again! So the way I see it, the dealer can deal with it now!

Let me append that, sometimes it's possible to install a freeze plug that's slightly undersize or not get one fully seated and, boom, out it comes. It's also possible to have a freeze plug hole honed slightly oversize so that it's nigh impossible to get a freeze plug to seat properly. Had that happen on a rebuilt 300 c.i.d. six once. The hole was honed oversize AND had a gouge in a small area of the seating surface. Wound up filling in the gouge (an area about the size of a ball point pen tip) with J-B Weld and coating the freeze plug with Permatex 2C. Drove it for three more years with nary a leak, heard it's somewhere around Longview, Texas still going with no leaks. Seen it happen on a few NEW engines, too. Not that big of a deal, but if I can avoid a dealer service department, I will.

Hi!... FORDMAN : The block heater frost plug has many moving parts. The "O" ring on mine was torn slightly when it was installed at the factory. That is what caused it to blow out. I picked it up from the dealer today and the mechanic told me that they have seen this happen many times on the 5.4 and 4.6 engines. They installed a new block heater frost plug, right this time!
