Anybody use remote starters?
Hey,
I am interested in getting a remote starter for my y2k 150.
When I get in I want to go!
But I like to wait until it warms up before I put my foot in it.
A remote starter would warm up my truck while I finish my wheeties.
So when I go downstairs, I can just go.
Any suggestions for a remote starter?
Any problems to avoid?
Thanks,
AHAB

Well I was going to put one in but when I went to do it I found out that to put one in you have to disconnect the anti theft system. They have to make the truck think that the key is in there all of the time. so this is a down fall but if you don't mind doing this I would recmend an auto command starting system I have had one and my mom and dad both have them in there Ford's.. If you find out something different let me know this is just what I have found out. Some one has told me that Ford makes one that you don't have to change anything.. hope this helps

I don't have one...but my boss has one in his Shuvy Suburban. He loves it..and it is neat that he can start it from inside his house.
He did have to readjust the starting time of the remote starter because it was keeping the starter engaged a bit too long. Since then...no problems at all.

There are lot's of new units that only over ride the transponder/antitheft in the key so it only operates when you remote start, otherwise it's just like stock. You don't have to pull the transponder out of the key to do remote starters. If you are not into purchasing an alarm you can get a keyless entry remote starter so you have only one remote. In the summer you'll really love one also.

I just had the Viper 550ESP alarm/remote starter installed on my 99 F150. It's the second one I have owned and I really enjoy it. It has all of the conveninece features such as remote lock/unlock, remote windows up and down which also added the express up and down feature to both windows (i.e one touch operation from the factory window switch, Ford only offers express down for the drivers window only) I also added the valet carcom which is a device that allows total control of the security system via a telephone. So if I am out of range (the remote has a 1/4 mile range) I can start my truck, roll up or down the windows, and arm or disarm the system. This comes in handy if your locked out of your vehicle. If my vehicle is car jacked I can call from a phone and trigger the Vehicle Recovery System which will sound the alarm, flash the lights and disable the starter once the thief pulls over and turns off the ignition.
In order to add the remote start feature, a Pats interface module (PATS is Fords Passive Anti Theft System, Which requires a signal from a chip enbedded in the key)must be installed. This allows the PATS system to remain fully functional.

Hey PKRWUD
What would be the proper warm up times for the drivetrain after the engine? My 302's high idle(1500-1600rpm) for maybe 1-2 minutes and then come down under 1000. I assume they're properly warmed up. My dad tells me to let the tranny warm up for awile or it'll break the back-up light switch thing. So the backup lights will be on, even in a forward gear. Have seen several do this, especially in the cold.

Hey !
Thanks for all of the great ideas, keep them coming!
It sounds like from Barlitz ford makes one?
Also I live In Orlando, Most of the time it is pretty warm here.
I would prefer to have ford install their product due to warrenty issues that would be avoided.
Does anybody have a part # or name of the ford remote starter?
Thanks for all of the help.

I have the auto mate which was installed by my dealer it also has an alarm and keyless entry,The remote start is one of the best options I have I can program it to start once an hour if I want in extremely cold weather.I paid $399 installed
Ahab, It's actually a bad idea to let it sit and warm up, and then "get into it", because the rest of the driveline needs to warm up too. If you live in a cold climate, you may want to warm it up, but you should still drive it easy until the rest of the driveline gets to operating temps.
Take care,
~Chris

the man that invented the remote start deserves a night with cindy crawford. ive had one in my 97 f-350 and i love it! i plow alot of snow which means getting up at all hours of the night and its nice to go outside to a warm cab and ice free windshield. i got mine at circuit city for 149.95 installed. unless your an electical wiz ide paid to have it put in.
Ford does not deal with Automate. That is just the brand your dealer chose to offer. As a matter of "fact" Ford deals with Code Alarm. I know, I work for Ford, and install the alarms and remote starters. For example, my dealership installs Audiovox remote starters. I am also a Black Widow dealer/installer. I like the Black Widow since they have a "tachless" setup. No wires to tap into your engine. Realize, I only decided to deal with them because I was impressed with the product. Not to spam Black Widow, or myself, I have a Code Alarm remote starter in my truck, with the Ford system 4 alarm. It works great. In this day and age, you'll be hard pressed to find a brand that is garbage. I would stay away from those purchased at Wal-Mart, and similar stores. When you get it installed, asked to have ALL the wires soldered. I have seen work from local alarm shops, needless to say, I have not been impressed. You can get an alarm/remote starter combo. Meaning you only have one module, one set of wires, and one remote. Look around, but don't necessarily go for the best price.
Do you have factory keyless entry? They can utilize your factory remotes, or you can use the ones with the remote starter. I recommend the remote starter with it's own remotes, because you'll get a lot longer range. Remember, factory remotes only have about 40' range. You don't want to have to walk out on the front lawn to remote start your truck. Ranges vary from 400feet plus.
The factory PATS system is easily bypassed for remote start use only. I recommend giving them a "spare" key to "wire in" to the unit, as you'll get better, more reliable performance than the bypass modules the alarm shops sell. It gets wired in with a relay. A wire wrap about 6 times around the key, and about 6 times around the key cylinder.
Hope I didn't bore you, but I'm just trying to help. Feel free to e-mail me.

Sycoholic I have keyless entry. I want a remote starter, but want to keep the PATS thing. Is there anything that you reccomend? Also, is there a way to roll down the windows?
