5.4l enough motor?
Actual results....
My cousin has a 2000 F250 crewcab, longbox 4x4 with the 5.4l, and I have never driven it, but I have ridden in it. It seems to have enough power for what he needs it for, mostly camping and towing a small fishing boat. He opted for the 4.10 gears though, so that helps out. I just know that it is a lot of truck for that motor, as at times I wish that my F150 had more power, but then agian who doesn't?
Personally I would take the Powerstroke for the added power and resale, plus the better warranty on the engine...Plus I have a buddy that rebuilds the powerstroke, and can get me some cheater parts for it....(i.e. bigger turbo, chip, the exhaust down pipe basically the banks kit for free).

Buying the smallest engine available for a vehicle only ensures minimal performance. The cost adder for the V10 is probably less than $800. Chicken feed on a $35,000 rig. What you should be more concerned with is the payload/tow numbers on the 250SD. Tow is good but payload is not so good. Compare payload of 250SD to 150 with a 7700GVW. The 150 is lighter weight (better gas mileage) and has comparable payload. I believe the 150/7700 has a 9.75 rear end also.
The 7.3L does not produce 350 HP, nor does it produce 750 LB/FT Torque.
Straight from Ford's website:
Horsepower 275 @ 2800
Torque (lb.-ft. @ rpm) 520 @ 1500
...and this the the more powerful of the TD's.

ok my turn
For all you diesel nuts out there.Yes it is a good motor, yes it has gobbs of power and the gas mileage should be decent. Here is where I run into my personal problem with the powerstroke.OIl changes do cost more, and the price for diesel has stayed at 1.89 a gallon for the last month , while unleaded gas prices fell from 1.79 a gallon to 1.37 a gallon( locally).Suddenly it is way cheaper to drive a v-10. Oh ya I stand the noise the diesel makes either.
Tubby,
I had a 1999 F-250 two wheel drive with the 5.4 engine. I used it everyday as a work truck usually carrying about 700 pounds of weight in the back. I also used it for towing boats, landscape trailers and a racecar trailer. As I stated in the first sentence, I had a F-250 with the 5.4 engine. The truck was so under powered. I called it the slug. I finally got so pissed off about the truck being so under powered, that I bought a F-250 diesel. So, if you do mininal towing and do not carry much weight, you might be alright. Bugman.

Yeah, you are right it doesn't run 350hp or 750 ft lbs...It only does this with a couple hundred dollars of mods....
Diesel is $1.16 here and propane $1.20...gas =$98.9 reg...
Oil--these things go extended oil changes--with the right setup and analysis, you never have to change it again..
