Start Up?
Hello all Ford truck owners. Why does my truck start on the 5th to 7th engine revloution? My old chevy fired right up when I turned the key. Why is Ford delaying start up? Is this to cause premature engine wear? I want to know what hell is going on.

Let me tell a story about cold weather starting. My old chevy 1990 350 chevy started at the first turn of the key. My current Ford turns over for at least 5-7 times before it fires cold or hot? What the hell is going on? Is Ford making an engine to burn out early? I have worked for American Honda and Acura. None of these engines turn 5-7 times to start.
Why is Ford doing this to us?
Lexus has just introduced a new warranty progam of 3 years and 100,000 on its used cars. I guarantee you they don't turn these many revolutions to start. (which is where the majority of wear takes place)
The domestic manufacturers are designing for failure at 100,000 miles which the people deem satisfactory. Given the technology increases in the last 5 years this is completely possible.
As long as the American Public accepts 60 month finacing as the norm this will continue to be the norm.
Debate me intelligently.

Hell, The AMC Products used to until they were bought by Chrysler.

I know what you mean about the starting problem. I had a 98 4.2 that did the same thing, almost all the time and eapecially when it was cold out. Most 4.2's that I've heard start also did it. Of course dealer told me that it was normal. My 99 4.6 starts immediatly though.
Both of the 5.4Ls that I have owned have fired off right away.
The 4.2L engine is not the same design as the 4.6L and 5.4L Triton. So they certainly will start/run differently.

Are you pumping the gas pedel bfore you start your truck,If so don't.
Mine starts right up.
Don't touch your gas pedel when you start up the truck, just turn the key. If you are pumping the gas firstyou may be flooding the truck a little.
If it doesn't start on the first try, turn the key back to the off position, this will reset the distributorless ignition, and try again.
hope that helps

I have the six and it starts just like any other engine: TURN THE KEY. Always fires off, first hit. Whether you have the 4.2, 4.6, or 5.4 doesn't make any difference on starting.

Odin,
When you turn the key to the on position are you letting the fuel pump have a change to charge??
When I turn the key I wait until I hear the fuel pump quit then I fire it up. And it fires right up!
Just a thought!

i would not worry about 5 to 6 secs of start time hurting your engine. The rpms are so low with the starter engaged that it is probably insignificant as far as wear is concerned. It is an unusual thing, however. Mine fires right up. I agree that you should allow your fuel system to pressurize before
kicking in the starter.

BTW pumping the gas pedal does nothing for fuel injected engines.
Only on the old carb engines does this make any difference.
Think about how the fuel gets to the engine.
The fuel injectors can't energize until the ignition is on.
There is no accerator pump like the old engines had.

I think Odin means, "Why does it take so many cranks to start?" I don't know, I have the 4.2L and it kicks off within what seems like the first revolution or two, possibly a little quicker than the 300 sixes I've had.
I think that some of you misunderstood the original post. The truck always starts, I never pump the gas pedal.
I am referring to the fact that the engine does not start until the fifth revolution of the starter. It always starts but not until at least the fifth revolution.
Count yours please and get back to me if you have a 4.2 liter engine. Thanks for all the replies and feedback.
