pcv valve was disconnected!

Today, my friend and I went to change his pcv valve on his 96 4.9 I6 (which is a task I'll tell ya) and we discovered that it wasn't attatched !! Considering where it is located, figuring out how that thing came undone is beyond us, and for how long is yet another issue. What damage could have been done to his engine having it not attatched? He mentioned that already his rpm's seem higher.

Probably has been running lean due to the unmetered air coming in thru the v/cover? Might want to check the s/plugs for proper 'color'?

time for an engine flush (oil not cooling)

the pcv when working properly prevents varnish and sludge build up. he might have some of the smaller oil pathways plugged up and could be causing internal engine damage

good luck

Funny thing you said that about the plugs, when we went to check them one of the boots broke. He's told me that this is the 4th set that he's gone through and every time it's the same one that breaks. He's been changing his plugs too often which has always bugged him. I betcha ten to one that was the problem.

hcmq:
For SURE on the flush.

Thanks guys.
