99 5.4L Engine Replacement
Ref: 5.4L Oil Leak
I have heard that Ford is replacing engines or installing a head gaskets (band-aids) to fix.
I live in Northern VA. Three dealers here have never heard of the Oil Leak problem. Mine leaks on right side and drips onto exhaust. Going to dealer this coming Monday. Looking for supporting info. I printed out the 5.4L oil leak threads and will take with me to dealer
I can't find any TSBs online listing this. HELP, does anybody have a copy of the TSB or the TSB number?
Does anybody know what 5.4's are the problemactic ones? Can they be tracked by Lot numbers, VINs, or something?
Please Help.

I also live in NOVA. I have heard of this oil leak, however, I don't have that problem - yet! I have a 98 Expedition with the 5.4L. I have 49K on it and took it into Jerry's for the piston slap problem. I went in with the TSB. No questions asked and they are putting in the new motor as we speak! I would go loaded with info AND a TSB if you can find one. They have treated me fairly well although they've had the truck for 2.5 weeks now. I had to wait for the appropriate lift to open, but they got the new engine in in less than 5 days!

Jerry's (in Annadale) is where I just had my truck in to complain of the burning oil smell. They came back with "...no problem found but you did have a coolant leak." The 5.4L oil spots in my driveway maintians the leopard appearance of the blacktop and the smoke from oil dripping onto the exhaust is getting worse. Trying out Ted Britt on Monday.
What is Piston Slap? How do you diagnose? What does it sound like?

Ted Britt is where I bought mine.... I initially took it there. I told them to start the thing up COMPLETELY COLD and listen for the knocking. They said they did not hear anything...I was not satisfied!
PISTON SLAP: When you start your engine in the morning (below 70 F, but worse the colder it is!) The engine sounds normal for about 10 seconds then you get a deep knocking sound for about 15 seconds, then it stops. 1 or more pistons are rocking from side to side because the pins holding them to the connecting rod are not connected properly which allows the piston to hit the bore or cylinder walls. This causes damage over time! Your engine will not last as long as it should! If you have something like this, drive it until about 5K before your warranty is up then take it in! I got 49K out of the first engine but I didn't start hearing the sound until about 40K....
Good luck at Ted Britt!
