installed 5.4l reman engine - throwing codes

Installed reman 5.4l 3v engine from one of the prominent internet remanufacturers. Engine supposedly came timed and ready to go.

Engine fired right up after install. Idling rough and throwing P0012 and P0016. Are there any potential resolutions other than resetting valve timing?

Need a little more info here.

Did you check the wiring harness and did you re-use the sensors?

I did reuse sensors. I have yet to check the harness.

Actually, the VCT sensors came new in the reman engine. Those are the only ones that have been replaced.

Eh... you can try changing the sensors. If that doesn't work, I'd immediately call the place you bought the engine from. Don't take it apart yet!

Maybe call the engine supplier first?

Supplier indicated that I must have knocked timing out by rotating engine backwards. I don't recall doing that, but I took their word for it. The timing was indeed off. I re-timed and took these photos of the timing marks. Started it up after reassembly and still running rough and leaving codes P0012, P0016, and P2196.

I fail to see why turning the engine backwards could change the timing? Sounds like BS to me.

Yep, x2. Engines will sometimes rotate backwards after shutting down from inertia.

Your phasers are swapped. Left is driver's side. That could throw the timing marks off. Watch this:

I believe it is 180 degrees off, but my understanding is that this should not make a difference.

So, you think that there is no reason the phasers are marked right and left? Surely you jest.
Please tell us the name of the engine rebuilder.

Retired. Pics attached. Still getting p0012, p0016, and p2186 after this reset. Runs rough. Not sure what I fouled this time around.

Make sure the codes are deleted and see if they come back. At this point, I think I would be suspicious of the cam sensor or wiring to the sensor. The manufacturer may have used cheap aftermarket sensors.
