I was going to change my oil this morning but when I checked the price of 5w-20 oil and a filter I found that the local parts house (Autozone) wants $30.00 for five quarts of oil and $10 for the 820s filter! That's more than the local stealership charges for a complete oil change with six quarts of oil!

What are the rest of you paying for this stuff and where are you buying it?

Has anyone bought this from Amazon? I looked but they had a of complaints (with pictures) about the filters being damaged and not fitting and I wonder if any of it is really made by Motorcraft. The filters are sold by "Ford" and the oil by "Motorcraft" NOTE THE QUOTES and not by Amazon so I suspect that they might be fakes.

 

This summer I am ordering a 55 gal drum of Motorcraft 5w-20 because I use it in pretty much all my equipment. It would be handy to be able to fluid dispense it.

 

Have you tried Walmart? If they don't have it in stock, it's available for ship-to-store. A 5 qt jug of oil is $19.22 and a FL820S is $3.97.

If you are in an area where it may not be convenient to shop for motor oil, for your needs there is Amazon Basics 0w-20 oil. With the ASTM D-5800 testing showing it is FAR more stable than the likes of most other "full" synthetic oils, and that it it includes moly and a huge splash of boron, I'd suggest it over Mobil One any day. The ASTM D-5800 has the Amazon Basic 0w-20 oil at 9.9 vs M1 at 10.7 (lower means the oil is more stable in high heat). API says the absolute max for this test is 15.0. If your engine has lots of miles on it and oil stability is a major consideration, consider the Pennzoil yellow bottle conventional oil 10w-30 as it has ASTM testing at 4.4, which beats any synthetic out there. Cold start ups at minus 25F means it will still flow at most temperatures we see in the US. It's not for arctic use though.

If I needed a stronger than normal motor oil, the Amazon Basics 0w-20 would be on that list to consider. Do not confuse this with the 5w-20 Amazon Basics as it is a completely different formulation and is a conventional oil of ho-hum performance. But the 0w-20 is for real and a bargain for $22.99 for a 5 qt bottle. You should be able to pickup an oil filter, either Motorcraft, Napa Gold, Wix, or Purolator One for around 6 bucks.

 

I almost exclusively shop at Walmart for my oil and filters. But don't try and go late on a Saturday or Sunday because the shelf will most definitely be out of stock. They only keep a few on the shelves and on weekends people tend to clean them out

 

That's why you might as well order it online for store pickup. No shipping charges. If I order it today, it will be ready for pickup today if it's in stock at the store, probably Friday if it has to be shipped in.

You hit the nail on the head! Walmart is 25 miles from here and I've NEVER found the Motorcraft oil or filter in stock there! Just an empty hole on the shelf.

Labnerd: so you recommend the Amazon Basics oil instead of Motorcraft? My engine is a 2010 5.4 and I'm using "normal" motor oil (Motorcraft).

I'm in Orlando and this place is full of auto parts stores but Motorcraft oil has always been hard to find. The only place that stocks it and isn't always out of it is Autozone but like I said they now want $29.99 for 5 quarts!

 

When Motorcraft oil was 17-19 bucks for the 5 qt bottle, it was a bargain for what was in the bottle. At 25 bucks, it's no bargain and there are better choices in that price point. Yes, Amazon Basic in 0w-20 is a much better overall oil than Motorcraft AND it's a few bucks less. You'll have a much stronger base oil and a much better additive package with the AB oil. If you think Mobil One is a good oil, you'll love AB oil. I'd put it ahead of Mobile One in this viscosity range. FWIW, the manufacturer is Warren Distributing. They are a major blender for custom branded motor oils, some of which are extremely specialized. As I understand it, Infinium is the formulator for the additive package and they are one of the top players in the formulation market.

When I say normal, that's normal service duty. Like driving around town or hiway, not pulling a load and not sitting in traffic in 100F heat. The AB oil should handle any severe duty you can throw at it.

 

So order it online a few days before you will be going to Walmart anyway for other things. They won't ship it to your home, but they will ship to store. Order several and stock up.

That's what I was going to do but I went by a Super Target in another town today so I stopped in and they had everything in stock. 5 Qt of MC 5W-20 was $19.23 and a MC 820S filter was $3.67! All together about 2/3 of AZ's price!


Thanks for the advice Labnerd, I hadn't heard of that brand of oil but I think I'll give it a try the next time that I buy oil.

 

That's a good deal - cheaper than Walmart.
