God I hope not, I just did a timing set in January of 2016. Maybe a valve is stuck?

Compression test on 1,2,3

Did a compression test on 1,2,3 this morning.
Unscrewed #1 Spark plug by hand. Bottom half of plug well was wet as heck and had a bunch of sludge that reek of gasoline. Maybe that injector is stuck open?

#1 tested at 160 psi. (It was 'wet' from the sludge and gas) Did not squirt oil in #1 for a wet test.

#2 tested at 125psi dry and 160psi wet.

#3 tested 75psi dry and 135 wet.

When I warm up a bit I am going to swap out the #1 injector and see if the miss and the P2196 go away...

You have a mechanical problem in #3, sticky or burned valve or bad rings. I think you are looking at a rebuild or replacement.

Thanks glc. I guess compression test don't lie... At the least I am looking at rings. I would do the heads while off anyway, it has 160k on it.

This was a bad truck from the start. Lemon from the start and finishing up that way.

I suspect leaking injectors washed the oil off the cylinder walls and wiped out the rings and/or cylinder walls. New engine is needed.

Thanks for the replies and advice!

Is this a good deal? I would get the heads done locally.

Seems to me that it's a good deal. I paid almost $500 for a new short block for my crappy riding lawn mower. It was a Kohler Courage single cylinder that is known for being a crappy engine. Don't ever buy a lawn mower that has a Kohler Courage engine.

Kohler's commercial engines are made in WI. The crappy consumer engines like the Courage are "assembled" in MS of chinese parts as i understand.

Yeah, too many of the 5.4L 3V engines have problems with the VCT and in 2005 they also may have given you a bonus of leaky fuel injectors. But, some last 300k miles. My chinese kohler lasted 64 hours of operating time. The Husqvarna riding mower it was in was only about 7 yrs old. I didn't want to replace the mower but it was probably a bad deicision to pay $500 for a new short block for that crappy engine.

I think I have had all or most of the 2005 f150 problems. "Blew" an injector within 2 months of driving off lot. Constant odor of raw fuel. Almost had it returned to FORD under Lemon Law action. Ford finally made the repair and I stupidly agreed to settle and keep the truck. Cats went at 79k (just made the warranty on that!) probably due to injectors. Injectors replaced after the cats. Escaped the dreaded broken spark plug syndrome and managed to get all 8 out intact. I think that was just after cats also. Chain guide broke at about 120k and threw cam sensor codes. Chased that for a few weeks and unfortunately changed the PCM before realizing a timing set was needed. Transmission went somewhere before 120k if I remember correctly. Four corners starting to rust through now... This thing is worse than a boat!

i wish I got rid of it 10 years ago. Unfortunately, I’m not in a position to purchase even a used vehicle. I’m looking at getting the Ford short block and having heads done locally, OR ordering from https://www.powertrainproducts.net/F...gine-s/803.htm.

As you probably know Ford tech Makuloco recommends only Ford phasers.
