Question Check Engine Light

About once a year when I first crank my 97 F150 w/4.6 the motor will idle rough and the check engine light will blink several times and then stay on. When the engine warms up the motor runs and idles fine with no more problems even at crank up after this. The last time it happened I just disconnected the battery and cleared the code and hasn't happend till yesterday. ??????? Any ideas. Is there the possiblty of a idle sensor? Help. Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken, a flashing "check engine" light means a misfire is occuring. I've also heard that if not fixed, this will eventually cause engine damage. Might want the dealer to check it out jcrosby. Just my .02.

This past summer one morning when I started my truck it appeared to be running slightly rough and then the check engine light came on.It ended up being a cracked spark plug. I read here somewhere about the sparkplug wire boot design possibly contributing to this. It cost me $90 to have dealer correct it. Just my two cents worth. Good luck.

On OBD-II systems the PCM will illuminate the check engine light if it recognizes a component fault for two consecutives drive cycles. It will continue to light up for three or more consecutive cycles until it does not detect any malfunction. You will need a SCAN tool to get the code (what dealers use) and then the probable cause or have it checked by a dealer.

It is not recommended to get the battery disconnected because it will erase stored operating parameters from the memory and cause the engine to run rough for a period of time while the computer relearns the information.
