1986 302 Timing Spout

Attempting to set timing on a 1986 f150 302. It seems the spout connector has been removed. Is it possible just to time it to the desired 20-24 degrees btdc with SPOUT connected?

Thanks glc, now it seems that the connector on the distributor is in the way, it is hitting the thermostat. If I had about another inch clearance I could get it to 10 btdc.

Looks like cap and rotor need replacement. That may be half my problem

Make sure the distributor is positioned correctly and the wires are in the correct cap terminals. The cap clips are between 4-5 and 3-7.

Put in fresh cap & rotor. Checked firing order, all correct.

Are the cap clips between 4-5 and 3-7?

I had an 86 302 in a F150. The dizzy might be off 1 tooth which might be why it's hitting the thermostat housing. I ran mine at 14 degrees, spout disconnected..

I’m thinking that I should get #1 cylinder up and see how close it is to 10 degrees BTDC , and check if rotor is on #1 ? This engine is definitely off time. I don’t know how it just made it to NY from Oregon!

Well, the distributor had to be taken out a bit and rotated so we could get the correct timing without hitting the thermostat housing. Don't know how this truck made it from west coast to east... Timing was seriously retarded, carbon was thick on the plugs. Replaced them. Runs great now!
