Is the 5.4 in the heavy half seven lug any different than a normal 5.4?
Is the 5.4 in the heavy half seven lug any different than a normal 5.4?
Hey guys, after reading the forums at this site and not finding answers anywhere I figured I'd join up and pick the brains of you knowledgeable folks. I recently came across a steal on my boss' old work truck. It's a 2006 heavy half, I think he called it a 7700 or the 'seven lug' F150 XLT. The problem, is the engine is shot. I figured we'll if I get a new motor, I'd still be stealing this pickup for the price. He's got thousands into new parts, good shape, blah blah. Anywhom, the price for the motor on this pickup seems to be much higher than the basic 5.4 from what I've seen, and also tougher to find. The question I have is can I put the engine from another pickup into this even if that one wasn't the heavy half? What's the difference in the motor itself? Would it be easier and more cost efficient if I got it rebuilt instead? Thanks for the help guys I'm kinda stuck. Anything helps. Hope to hear from the folks here.
All 5.4 3 valves are essentially the same. The heads were redesigned in mid-2008 to use a different style spark plug. The only engine that I wouldn't use would be out of a 2004, there are some differences. All years are subject to VCT/cam phaser issues and 2005's had a bad batch of fuel injectors.
The 7700 was previous generation, if it's a 7 lug 2006 I believe it has a 8200 GVW.

Generally speaking it's usually cheaper to install a reman engine vs rebuilding what you have.
Depends on the nature of the failure, to know what is cost effective.
How many miles? How was the overall vehicle maintenance?
