Backfiring

Recently installed 5.4 engine in 1999 Ford F15. The problem is it cranks, but backfires really bad, and sounds like it's skipping. Any suggestions.

Sounds like the cam timing is toast, How many miles on the engine and were they hard miles?

Check the compression to see if the problem is mechanical.
