The owners manual states that you use motorcraft 5W-30, so if you use anything other than "motorcraft" they could also say that you used the wrong oil, in my owners manual they don't specifically state that the warranty will be void for not using 5W-30, like they do for not using a ford/motorcraft gas cap ( BTW I have a NAPA locking gas cap and it works just fine).
The ford maual says that you use oil with ford specification wss-m2c153-g, take a look at these web sites and look what meets wss-m2c153-g http://www.nemco.mb.ca/pdsuper_duty.html http://www.amsoil.com/products/pmo.html
It looks like 10W-30 meets it to me
what do you guys think

I also thought that this site was kinda interesting also. http://www.fourfold.org/RoverWeb/OilFAQ.html

Here is another site http://www.industry.net/c/page/1702954/81323
Note that it is only 0W-30, 5W-30, and 10W-30 thats meets WSS-M2C153-G.

DAW,

You have provided a good legal argument with Ford here regarding oils that meet or exceed their specs and regarding a voided warranty. An argument I would personally not like to take against them in court for obvious reasons. Maybe that's what they are counting on?

J.C.,

You are correct. It is an OHC engine.

I should have went into more detail. It was a connecting rod (bottom end) and not a push rod. Sorry I have always referred to a "Rod" as a connecting rod.

Question

Ahh, I see. I've heard of people throwing rods before but, never got an explanation of what it meant. When people throw rods is it always the connecting rod or can you throw a pushrod too? What causes you to throw a rod? Thanks for the info.

J-C: Concerning your question "What causes a thrown rod?" Well, I don't know what does but I can tell you what doesn't: 10W30 Motor oil.

KKirt1 I agree with you that oil did not cause his engine to throw a rod unless its been in there for to long of a time or miles. Now if he had a camshaft failure then maybe theres a slight (Very slight) chance it could have been the oil. It has happened in overhead cam engines using 15w40 or 20w50.

Johnny,

I am sure the Ford attorneys are well aware of ducumentation and would happily supply it if it came to that. That why they get paid "the big iron."

If it is agreed by all that the incorrect weight oil was used then all this is academic and you will lose.

Seems simple enough to me that using what is stated in your owner's manual solves the issue and documenting what your dealer used in an oil change settles it.

I am using Mobil 1 5W-30 year 'round until my warranty is up to prevent any misunderstanding.

J.C., Generally when some says they threw a rod they mean that a connecting rod broke and came out the side of the block or out the oil pan. This can happen if you spin a rod bearing and it seizes up on the crank shaft or in rarer cases if a piston seizes up in it's cylinder. Either way a horrendous thing to have happen.

HELP!!!

I use Mobil 1 exclusily in my truck and did in my previous truck as well. I changed my oil this weekend and spent half a day searching for Mobil 1 5W-30 motor oil, and it was missing from the selves of every place I visited! I finally conceeded and purchased a case of Mobil 1 10W-30, and am now wondering if I did the right thing? I did visit the Mobil 1 Web site and the specs for the Tri-synthetic 10W-30 oil was better (temp range wise) than standard 5W-30, so I hope I'm not going to blow a rod! I remember a thread concerning a problem/recall on the Mobil 1 5W-30, so I assume that's why I didn't find it on the selves. I e-mailed Mobil 1 concerning using their 10W-30 in my truck, I'll post their response when I hear back from them. Any other thoughts? Am I now driving a time bomb?

I think that the book for my 1997 f150 gives me a slide type chart telling me what type to use based on temperture. It does not tell me to use 5w-30 only. Am i the only one to have this chart? Just wondering.....

sorry... I may of been thinking of the book for my 1996 gsxr.

Exclamation

Well let me throw another worm into this can. As ml pointed out (which I'm not sure
anyone caught) "premium unleaded gasoline is not recommended (particularly in the
United States)" . That's according to my '00 F150 manual on page 211. It goes on to
say that "Aftermarket products could cause damage to the fuel system. Repairs to
correct the effects of using an aftermarket product in your fuel may not be covered
by your warranty." The key words here is "may not", but who wants to do battle with
Ford? Also I don't know if this means that anyone using premium whom experiences
problems that require warranty work will have more problems with Ford . Food for
thought!

I received an E-mail from Valvoline back on using 10W30 synthetic VS 5W30 conventional oils. "10W30 synthetic oil will flow better at low outdoor ambient temperatures than any conventional 5W30 oil.". He also said that 10W30 is the #1 selling viscosity motor oil on the planet.

My wifes Nissan Pathfinder dealer used 10W-40 on her's in spite of the 5W-30 specification. When asked about it they said "thats all we have in the shop". They will not be doing it again.
