ML,

My (Actually Wife's) 99 Expy states 5w30 also. So that has not changed since 97.

Psycho,

I have heard of this and wonder how Ford would react if you used the new Mobil 1 0W30 ???

This exceeds requirements but you might also be taking a chance.

Thumbs up

I think that Ford has recommended 5w30 for a few years now.

I did a little research and have came up with this info below.

99 Expy (5.4) = 5w30
98 Cobra (4.6 32V) = 5w30
94 Lightning (5.8, 351 HO) = 5w30
93 T Bird SC (3.8, SuperCharged) = 5w30

As you can see, this is a wide variety of motors, even with different technologies. I personally use it out of habit.

I don't have the 98 Cobra anymore.
It was a Lemon Law Buyback (Thank God)
I did keep the owners manual as a souvenir for ALL of my troubles.

But the rest are still mine.

I would love to hear Ford's explanation of this. If Ford is refusing to replace an engine because there was 10W30 oil in it, and they (FORD approved dealerships) are putting in 15W40, there is a problem.

Stihl,

Place yourself in my friend's position in my initial thread.

You have a engine warranty issue on YOUR truck and FORD denies your warranty claim for an engine failure. Remember, it was denied by Ford, not your dealer.

Ford pays for the warranty claim during its 3/36 bumper to bumper, if you have a problem. The dealer does not pay anything !

In this case, whom do you think would pay to fix your truck, You or YOUR dealer???

I would lay money that the dealer would try to weasel out of it. Even if they had changed the oil every time at 3,000 miles since it was new.

Just my .02….

Stihl,

15W-40...where do you live...Death Valley? Or maybe your dealer got a deal on it. Let us know his rationale for ignoring Ford's preffered specs.

This is a true statement in consumer reports
the bottom number (5w )is how the oil flows cold.
The top number is how it flows and acts hot(30w) 10w 30 does not protect no more then 5w30 when hot now 20w50 would hot. In all, engines the cams tend to wear the most and with the 5.4 engine being an overhead cam (cams all the way on top of the engine)they want oil there as fast as the can get it there.

It's a Ford Dealer here in PA. After reading the orignal woes of the warranty issue, I'd thought I'd ask what went into the 99 SC XLT 4x4 4.6...and his reply was as stated 15w-40! I remembered the manual stating 5w-30 and after reading this topic..figured I'd ask. But the drums sitting in the change area said it all!!! Anyway the first change was on the house...that's the last they'll see the truck short of warranty issues etc. I'll stick with my Penzoil 5-30W.. did I say "PA" ! My .02$ worth.

Guys,

While I do not especially agree that 5w-30 oil is the proper weight to use year 'round I am not a Ford power train engineer and have nothing to do with warranty claims.

Unfortunately if someone does have an engine warranty problem and a different oil weight was used from what is stated in the owner's manual, you won't have a legal leg to stand on. Remember, it's not what you think but what the facts are.

However, if a DEALER is varying from what is recommended to use I would have your service receipt marked with the oil weight and initialed by your service director. 15w-40 weight oil is a radical change from what the owner's manual states. I believe Ford should be made aware of this practice by some dealers for your protection. Otherwise a customer simply gets caught in the middle of a dispute between Ford and the dealer.

Just my $0.02 worth - I'm no lawyer (thank God), but it seems to me that if Ford is denying a warranty claim based on laboratory analysis of an oil sample from the engine, they should be able to produce a copy of the laboratory test report. If they are unable to provide this evidence of their analysis, then upon what is their claim denial based?

Put this in the "call your bluff and raise you" category.

Question

Maybe someone can help me out here. Isn't the 4.6 L engine an OHC engine? It's my understanding an OHC engine does not have push rods. So, how can you throw one if you don't have one? Correct me if I'm wrong.

In the lab it is exceedingly difficult to diffferentiate between 5-30 and 10-30. especially between brands. Not to mention the what use in the engine does to the oil viscosity over time.
