Think a vct solenoid is bad, Please help

I have an 07 expedition with a 5.4 liter 3v and it has had a weird misfire to it for a bit. It has been lacking power and every now and again it will get stuck in a limp mode and not make very much power at all along with a misfire and flashing check engine light, after about 45 seconds it will come out of it and start running at it's current norm. Then the other day I was backing into a spot and when I shifted it into reverse, it started to shake and knock and sputter with the rpms down a little under 500. I goosed it once and it went back to normal. I am leaning towards it being a vct solenoid based on how it is acting. Am I correct to believe that this will be the solution to the problem.

The expy has a whole brand new set of streetfire ignition coils and had plugs put in it last December. Oil was also just changed a week ago.

Fair warning: I am a 2v junkie and know almost nothing about the 3v engines
