Post Time For More Engine (302) Mods! Help Me Decide!

Ok now I have a Superchip and a K&N Drop in filter on my truck. I need some more HP! I want more HP but I mainly want to keep the truck nice and reliable. I have about $900 to spend. Whatever mod I do has to be totally compatible with my Superchip because I am not sending it back to be reprogramed (just got it) heh so NOS is out of the question. THE MODS MUST WORK WITH THE STOCK COMPUTER AND CHIP!

I have been thinking somewhere along the lines of a new cam and rockers. Or maybe some heads or an intake if anyone knows of good ones. Please tell me what you guys would do if you had $900 and the following truck:

1993 F-150 2WD FlareSide
5.0 (302), AOD Trans, 3.55 Gears
SuperChip, K&N, Pirelli Scorpion Zeros
50,000 miles

Also I don't want to do an exhaust cause I want to keep it quite and "sleeper like". So what would you guys do?

Do the heads and intake as well as the cam and rockers in steps or as money will allow.

Hmmm which one should I do first? The CAM and Rockers? Can you recommend me a good cam and rockers?

Thanks

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

back in 1973 I had a maverick with a 302. what I did to gain HP was to put a set of heads off a 351 windsor engine on it. I dont know if they will work on a fuel injected engine though.

Rockers may be OK (see some of the discussion about rockers in the "pre-97" threads). A cam will definitely NOT work well with the speed-density computer system.

You can get "free-flowing" quiet exhaust systems (muffler and cats) which will help. Might also consider some 3.73 or 4.10 gears.

I though that the 93's had the MAF and not the speed density? Because I though that onlt the late eighties trucks used Speed Density, at least SVO only sales conversions for the late eighties trucks to go from speed density to MAF. Or am I wrong? This stuff is confusing hehe.

Thanks

Yea the 4.10s are a good idea I will look into that. But as for the under drive pullies. I dunno, I have a 480w RMS amp in the truck and it's right on the edge of staraing the alternator. Wouldn't the alternator produce less power if I had the pullies on there? And therefore burn it up quicker or destroy my battery?

headers have to come first
i changed a cracked exhaust manifold on
a 92 f150 302 (last truck) was amazed at how small the exhaust port is
it's about 1" dia.
i whould go for new heads also if it's in the buget

Yea I was looking at the STEEDA headers they look really sweet. But I've heard that with headers you have to tighten the bolts about once every 20k miles, is this true?

yeah, dont due underdrives if you have a amp. it will kill charging. but headers will not goive you the seat of pants that you want. defienantly get 4.10 gears first, the a shift kit (if its auto), and a good cat back, headers are good, but only show improvement with other mods (intake, heads ect...)you might want to look into a new torque converter

Well as of right now it's looking like I will probably go with headers first. STEEDA has a nice set for $285 that has the gaskets, bolts and stuff. Plus they are a direct fit so no cutting stuff up. Then after headers probably a shift kit.

The rest I will have to wait and see. I want a cat back exhaust but I kind of don't because I like the truck to not be really loud. Cause I don't want everyone thinking it's all fast. So this way I can whoop up on Chevys easier

So on the headers do you have to tighten up the bolts very often? And do you guys know if they will work OK with my Superchip?

Thanks

Headers are a deffinant way to go. I absolutely love mine!!!! Nope, 93's are Speed density. Ever thought about dropping EFI in place of a intake and carb? You can pick up a combo fairly cheap. You would have to drop the psi on the fuel pumps though. I am planning this on my 89 in the near future.

it not that you have to tighten the bolts
every 20,000
it's more like check them
just use a removable locktight and they will be just fine.
the factory uses some type of locktight on there exhaust bolts.
just make sure you DON'T use the permanent
locktight.
