2005 f150 5.4 cam failure???

Hello all I've got a interesting situation here with my 2005 f150 with 5.4 3v. It died on me and after finding out the passenger cam had stopped turning I removed valve cover also timing cover to find what looks to be a cam follower has failed and busted which caused cam to jam and then sheared bolt on cam sprocket. So would my next best check before pulling head off be to do a compression test on that side? First I need to get new cam and new chain installed before I can do compression test. Also can I do compression test with everything removed from engine? Thanks

I think the engine is an interference engine. If so, the valves have hit all of the pistons on that side. You may as well pull the head and see what the damage is. I don't know that much about these engines so keep that in mind when you read my advice.

Before you pull the head, pull the plugs and take a look with a borescope.

I have researched and it definitely is a interference design engine but have heard thatsometimes you get lucky where the cam stops and valve damage does not occur. I can only hope for that

I will Maybe try this before doing a compression test. Can a borescope see the valves?

that's a common issue what happened but not common to stop the cam, so pull the head send it off get the valves done get a new cam followers, lifters, cam and cam phaser kit which comes with new bolts, if your into performance then no better time to get upgraded cams just a thought

If you try to do a compression test, you will do more damage with valves hitting the pistons.
