No fuel pressure and still runs

Recently my grandpa's truck a 2001 ford f150 with the 5.4 triton has been giving him trouble and he said it has not died on him while he has been driving it but a couple times it would not start up right away and he would then would cycle the ignition a couple times then it would start, he says it hasn't had the same power as it has had before, I'm thinking that the fuel pump is shot but I thought that if the fuel pump is shot that the truck wouldn't run at all but it still runs and then I put on a fuel pressure gauge and I got 0 psi, then I checked to make sure that the pump was getting power and it had power to the pump, any help would be much appreciated, I am new to this forum and not to familiar with fords, also I've read the the fuel pump module goes bad on these trucks that is located by the spare tire but the 2001 f150 does not had this module

No fuel pump driver module in 2001 somethings either wrong with the procedure you used to test the fuel pressure of the tool isnt working. The truck would not run with no fuel pressure in fact it needs near 38 PSI. Sound like a bad filter to me.

I replaced the filter as well and I checked the pressure after I replaced the filter and it was a 0 after the filter change and I did check the pressure on a different vehicle just to make sure that the gauge worked and it works fine

If the engine runs, it has fuel pressure.

It's obvious that something is wrong with either the gauge or your specific testing procedure.

I made sure that the gauge worked and I tested it on another ford and the gauge does in fact work correctly and I tested both of them exactly the same way

Something is wrong with your test port on the rail.

Is there any other place to test test fuel pressure besides the test port and how could the test not work, when I pressed down on the stem on the inside of the test port a little bit of fuel came out

A heck of a lot more than "a little bit" should come out - it should spray a couple of feet!

I know that that's why I think the fuel pump is going out because what I am thinking is that the pump is putting out just enough fuel pressure to keep the truck running and my grandpa also said the when he has to kick it down to get up a hill it doesn't have the power that it used to have

"just enough" is about 38 psi.

Actually, "just enough" is 28 psi. "Normal" is 35 to 40.

With the system depressurized, you can remove the valve core with a tire valve core tool. I do not know if a standard tire valve core will work but yours has an issue. Ford may have a replacement. A gauge can be connected with the core removed.

I know this is an old thread but I have an 01also and its a 5.4 with similar issues. As far as the test port goes, I have seen you and one other guy and myself included who have had 0psi at the test port. After a lot of digging in the last 24 hours is that some of these test ports are made wrong and the schrader valve sits too low in the assembly to be opened by the test guage adapter.

I just this morning corrected mine by removing it and grinding some off the top of the threads and after cleaning them up the tester hooked up perfectly. It could be that someone has replaced the shrader valve with a slightly shorter one.

However I did find a Motorcraft part number for a replacement valve that is specified to only fit the 4.6L v8 but works for the 5.4 and the 4.0 v6 as well as many older ford's. The number is Motorcraft CM-3461.
